Hello Ray,
I'm sorry you feel this way, but it is often down to the register office
Registrar in itself. If I approached the Tredegar Registrar herself I
find her pretty intimidating, yet the deputy 'she' is OK as long as you
leave them the application form and they will contact you between 1 and
7 days!. Yet again if you leave the application to Bob (gopher) he will
ring back and keep you informed at every stage, for instance. In
Tredegar nowadays it is a lottery for sure. Considering that Genealogy
is supposedly second to pornography on the net it seems that application
for BMD certificates for family history should yield a faster response
and profitability another advantage factor;))
I gave advice to one of our Gwent FHS members who was researching a
marriage at Maesteg, Glamorgan. I put him in touch with the Bridgend
Registry office and he was overwhelmed with the help that they gave him.
Apart from finding the details he needed they asked him to send in
details of other research so that they could help him re- certificates,
etc. Tredegar may be typical of many Registry Offices, but is it? What
are your lister views? If we can prove that Tredegar RO are inconsistent
with other areas perhaps we can put a complaint to them.
best wishes
Barrie Jones, Gwent. (Brenda has a bad cold and is under the doctor;)))

Hi Folks
One of my great+ grandfathers, Joseph WATKINS, is said to have built the Rolling Mill pub in Blaenau.
Does anyone know anything about this establishment? Has anyone come across it on a census?
At the time when I was going through all the census returns some years ago I didn't have this bit of information so I wasn't looking for it!
Many thanks,
Clare

Hi Brenda
I'm sorry I'm late in replying but I've just come back from holidays in
Italy, and just catching up on my e-mail.With regard to Tredegar R.O.help,I
must disagree with you,I started research in 1989 and at that time they could
not be more helpful. They were aware of the names I was researching, and would
often phone me up when they found a match in an unexpected place, and I wasn't
the only one they did this for. They also kept medical books, which they looked
up to explain an unusual death entry to you.I appreciate at that
time, perhaps, family history was not as popular as it is today, but this
continued up to around 1996 when the Registrar at that time retired.Since
then I've heared very little good news from the office.I'm sorry I have to be

There seems to be misinformed mystique on how difficult it is to trace a
birth, marriage or death entry at a R.O,if anyone shows an interest in this
mail I'll
explain all at a later date.Regards Ray.
Hi Listers.I sent this a couple of weeks ago but I am sorry to say I misdirected it, so here I am again and I beg your indulgence. My confirmed knowledge of my Perrys is as follows.
William Perry b? m? d pre 1914 Married ? with children? Shoemaker and Captain in 17th -19th Lancers (not clear)
Henry Edward Perry ,(William's son , my Father)always called Taffy
b )acc to military recs in Brighton Parish ,known to have lived in Blaina and Bangor.Joined Boys'army at age 16 received university education because of this.Served 12 years in the Royal Scots(Welsh Fusiliers)prior to 1914.(colours)and was a Sgt Major and Drum Major. Re-enlisted on Feb/1915 ,was discharged after 3-4 months for medical reasons(eyes) his reg #was20740.acc to same info he married Mildred Jane Smithers ,spinster in Pontypridd registry office on 8/Dec/1914, she was 30 yrs old ,his age was given as 35, Bachelor, the mutual address was 29 Wood Rd Pontypridd, her previous address was 94 Ilan Rd,
Abertridwr. They had a daughter Rosina Doris (not a common name)my half sister with whom I grew up.
He married my mother Elizabeth Thickett, spinster age 26,on 18th July/ 1922 in the registry office in Rotherham his age is given as 36 and his status as widower.I believe he lied about his age so as not to appear too old for my mother .I cannot get a birth certificate for him, maybe he was registered in Blaina. I have sent away for a birth certificate for Rosina Doris and hope it gives me some little clue,I am also following a line that looks promising.,so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. If there is anyone out there with any thing that might help I would be most grateful and pleased to hear from you
Does anyone have any information about the Tredegar and Hereford Breweries which had a number of pubs in the area early in the last century?
I would be grateful for any information. I have none.
Best Wishes,
Pam Griffiths
Hi, Pam: Type "Tredegar and Hereford Brewery" into Google. I didn't click
on any of the links but they look informative. The brewery is also listed
in Kelly's 1901 Monmouthshire Directory (according to one of the links) as
well. Esther (Edmonton, Alberta)
Hi List,
William Henry WILLIAMS, address 44 Blaina Gwent, Abertillery and Mary
Ann WILLIAMS address 18 King St Abertillery were married at Bethel
Chapel Blaina on 22 Oct 1894.
While waiting for the 1901 census to come on line (sigh!) to enable me
to track them further, is there SKS who could tell me how to ascertain
who else was living at those addresses in 1894?
William Henry was a coal miner so is unlikely to figure in any trade
directory.
Thanks in advance

Hello Listers,
I'm looking for my descendants of various Somerset families with the surname
of MAIN / MAINE / MAYNE / MAINEY.
I've found several folk scattered around the world, and have a feeling that
some may have crossed the waters to Wales, an area that I haven't yet
researched.
At the moment it would seem that those born in Radstock are the most likely
to have made the trip, and edited extracts from the 1881 census reveal the
following:-
Dwelling: 11 Wengraig Rd
Census Place: Ystradyfodwg, Glamorgan, Wales
James MAINEY, Unmarried, aged 23, born in Radstock, Somerset.
Rel: Boarder, Occ: Coalminer
Dwelling: 46 Mitchells Terrace
Census Place: Wombwell, York, England
Henry MAINEY, Married, aged 29, born in Radstock, Somerset.
Rel: Head, Occ: Coal Miner
Hannah MAINEY, Married, aged 29, born in Pontypool, Monmouth.
Rel: Wife
Eliza MAINEY, aged 8, born in Pontypool, Monmouth.
Rel: Daur, Occ: Scholar
Thomas MAINEY, aged 6, born in Monk Bretton, York.
Rel: Son, Occ: Scholar
Henry MAINEY, aged 2, born in Monk Bretton, York.
Rel: Son
I would be pleased to hear from anyone who can either connect to, or
recognises, these names.

Plenty of Somerset / Bristol families.
I am new to the list and wondering if anybody else has an interest in the PRICE name and EMMS. I have a John PRICE. Lived in Abertillery Monmouthshire and married May EMMS. Not much more at the moment.
Is anyone able to find the graves of David and Mary Lewis. They would have
been just over 60yo in 1860, and I can't see them living much beyond then,
but I could be wrong. I am looking for Thomas and Amelia Lewis's graves who
would have been about 60yo just after 1890. They lived in Pontypool until
about 1891, but they could have joined there eldest son around Blaenau
Gwent. They could be in Blaenau Gwent Baptist cemetery.

A new young monk arrives at the monastery. He is assigned to help the other
monks in copying the old canons and laws of the church by hand. He notices,
however, that all of the monks are copying from copies, not from the
original manuscript.
So, the new monk goes to the abbot to question this, pointing out that if
someone made even a small error in the first copy, it would never be picked
up. In fact, that error would be continued in all of the subsequent copies.
The head monk says, "We have been copying from the copies for centuries, but
you make a good point, my son". So, he goes down into the dark caves
underneath the monastery where the original manuscript is held in a locked
vault that hasn't been opened for hundreds of years.
Hours go by and nobody sees the old abbot. So, the young monk gets worried
and goes downstairs to look for him. He sees him banging his head against
the wall.
His forehead is all bloody and bruised and he is crying uncontrollably.
The young monk asks the old abbot, "What's wrong, father?"
With a choking voice, the old abbot replies, "The word is celebrate."
Hello,
Can anyone help please?
I am researching my g,g,g. grandfather Morgan Rees b. 1811 Blaina.
He married Elizabeth Jones in 1839 and they had four children, William,
Edwin, Catherine and John.
I am trying to find out as much as possible about the churches and schools of
the time, also the work that he may have been involved in as a young man
living in Blaina, and if and when he moved away from there.
I would be most grateful for any help /advice offered.

Hi Everyone
My great grandfather lived at 6 Mount Pleasant Row between 1884 and 1908. He
was Thomas Lewis a pit sinker who sank Six Bells. Looking at the Old Map
site I find on the 1886 map of Abertillery that these houses were in what is
now Alma Street. Do they still exist?

Hi there Listers,
Can s.k.s help. I have a 'John Aubrey, born 1838 in Penybont Radnorshire,
does anyone have access to the 1841,51,61 or 71 Radnorshire Census that may
have details of the family. His wife 'Eleanor ?' was born in Diserth in
Radnorshire in 1839.
Many thanks Ray Hapgood (Brynmawr)
I am ashamed to mention this, although I know that our Pontypool Branch
of Gwent Family History has put on events at Blaenavon Iron Works
Museum. But, until my cousin from Ohio and her friend from Seattle, USA
arranged a meeting I had never visited this place although it is only 7
miles from where I live! Big Pit, the colliery is only about 500 yards
from the Iron Works Museum. What a wonderful find the Ironworks museum
is! Anyone who is interested in their ironworks ancestors will find this
a wondrous place!
The tour is mainly at the Ironworkers cottages and our American Cousins
were soon experts of the puddling process, care of the tour guide.
A book available priced 2 pounds and 25 pence titled the Blaenavon
Ironworks ( ISBN 0 948329 89 0 ) which was first published in 1989 and
revised in 1992 is available on site. The Author is Jeremy K Knight B.A,
F.S.A.
It is worth every penny and of course the contents of the book are
typical of every Iron works in it's descriptive reading.
I am not myself commercially involved in the Ironworks site but would
definitely recommend a visit. My Rees family were puddlers at Tredegar
Ironworks and another place to visit is Tredegar Museum on Saturday only
between 10am and 4pm (unfortunately).
I am posting to Blaenau Gwent, Monmouthshire and MonmouthshireGwent
lists also, so forgive me. I thought I would share this with you as I
was truly knocked out!
best wishes
