Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Hi listers,
Many thanks to those who took time to respond to my request for info
from the 1851 census indexes. The replies have helped me eliminate some
possible areas, so guess I'll need to order the other fiches myself!

Hello Geoff
I am afraid that is just what it entails - reading the census returns for
1891. They are generally of good quality but the writing varies a lot.
However, we have over 500 people reading them and as I validate them (they
are transcribed, then checked, then validated) I am continually amazed at
what ordinary family historians can do! I would like the Welsh variety of
OFH to do likewise!
I now have 8 Welsh county projects - only five more I think - unless I have
the list of 1891 counties wrong!

Dear Paul,
I am experiencing problems with my contact for the Bleanua list, and I was
wondering if you would know the list owner/custodian's address so that I
may do something about the predicament I find myself in!!
Hope you are keeping well and all set for Easter?
Have a joyous Easter!
Regards,
Allen.
Thanks Mel - the William you found in the Rassau, should hopefully be the
grandson of the William I'm looking for (if you're referring to the 8-month
old baby in the Castle Inn. I haven't yet found the relationship to the 2
year old son of Watkin Price at Penbrynon, but I'm hoping the 5-year old
William Rees, son of David in Waungoch, also turns out to be a grandson of
the elusive William.
I'm very much thinking now that both William and Mary must have shuffled off
(or skedaddled to Merkin Land - no offense intended to the state-siders) by
the 1881 Census, and will have to wait until I can access the 1861-71
Censuses & the parish registers to get more info on their family.
William PRICE, born 1825, Bedwellty, Mon (iron miner in '51)
Mary PRICE, born c.1826, Bedwellty, Mon (his wife).
Thanks for trying!

Hello Dave
This is a global online project, we have organisers and volunteers all over
the world.
Welsh county projects are going to be small - about 20 microfiche sets.
Free Census projects range from 18 to 170 sets. A volunteer has to do a set
- average size is three fiche but I would think Welsh ones would rarely be
that big.
The 1891 fiche are standard fiche, about 5x6 inches with up to 100 pages and
a frame size of 10x12mm. The sort of thing seen in LDS FHC and in FHS
search rooms. The project uses its own software which comes in two
varieties, one based on a spreadsheet.
An organiser recruits and supervises a team of volunteers to transcribe a
county or part of a county. All the help you need is provided, including
the microfiche and software.
Looking forward to hearing from you.

Hi folks!
I'm hoping that some lovely jubbly personage might be able to find the
following couple on the 1881 Census, probably in the Rassau / Beaufort Wells
area of Llangynider Parish, or perhaps back in Bedwellty District.
William PRICE, approx. 55, born Bedwellty, Mon (iron miner in '51)
Mary PRICE, approx. 54, born Bedwellty, Mon (his wife).
Also, if anyone happens to have any year other than 1851, I wouldn't be too
upset to see where and what they were! ;-)
Unfortunately, I don't yet know Mary's maiden name, just that she was born
around 1826/7.
William was christened 13 Sep 1825 in Bedwellty Parish, son of Thomas PRICE
& Mary GRIFFITH, whose children also included Lewis PRICE (christened 02 Apr
1822) and Jane PRICE (christened 31 Dec 1823).
I can return look-ups on the 1851 Brecknock Census.
xx Kate.
hi, these are the only ones that come up in the 1881 census that seem to match a william and mary.,
if you are able to do a look up for me would like to know if there were any morgans living in 1851 in vaynor breckonshire, or prossers.
thanks

Hi Dave,
I just signed my name on as the coordinator for Breconshire. I had the
same questions about how transcriptions would be setup. I live in
California and have transcribed for FreeBMD for over a year and they are
running the program almost exactly the same.
Here is a portion of the e-mail I rec'd from Michael McCormick:
<<The LDS loan us microfiche sets. Each organizer borrows those sets
needed to cover their area. You post them out to the volunteers, who
must have access to a microfiche reader. They transcribe them, return
the fiche to you. The fiche then go out again to a checker. Finally
they come back to you for validation, assuming that you haven't farmed
that task out to a volunteer. You can cut out one move by having the
fiche sent direct from transcriber to checker. The data files can be
sent with the fiche on a floppy, but on my projects we move them round by
email. The 1891 fiche contain 10x12mm frames.>>
The program that is set up for transcription is 100x's better than an
.xls format. It is a downloaded freeware program designed especially for
this project and runs in DOS mode. When we use the same style program
for the FreeBMD transcription. SpeedBMD (the program) will automatically
pull up the most common Christian names when you begin to type in a few
letters, same with registrations districts and the Vol No.s are already
included:
For example if the entry is Hughes, Sarah.....Oldham,8d;579
If I'm already doing HUGHES the tab key will auto insert the surname, the
first two keys of 'Sarah' will bring up 1/Sara, 2/Sarah, so I hit the 2
key and it auto inserts the second spelling and allows for a middle name,
then tab to the next field and typing in 'Old' brings up Oldham,8d which
the tab key then inserts. then you just type in the page number and
you're on to the next entry. It is called SpeedBMD for a reason!!!
If you have any other questions, you might want to look at the website
which is http://freecen.rootsweb.com/ .
BTW, I would have NO PROBLEM mailing you fiche to transcribe in Canada,
hint..hint!
Best wishes,
Dawn Perry-Taft

Hello everyone
The Free Census project aims to transcribe ALL the UK 19th century census
returns to create an online 'free-to-view' database.
Currently we have nearly 50 projects covering a county or part of a county.
All but one are English, the only Welsh project covers Anglesey. The first
Scots project is in the pipeline.
We would dearly love to hear from anyone who would be willing to organise a
Welsh county project. All the support you need will be provided including
microfiche and software.
If like us, you believe this information should be freely available and
available for free, why not drop me a line?

Hi!
I'm hoping someone with access to the 1851 census indexes
will be able to check a name for me please. AMY EDWARDS age approx.
25, possibly with 1 or 2 children , and maybe even a husband LEWIS
EDWARDS (not sure whether he was still alive then). I don't know where
they may have been living in Mon. - they seemed to move around into all
parts of the county over the years.
Any help would be gratefully received. Thanks.

Dear Irene,
This is the only Henry PERRY with a father by the name of William in
Wales at the time. Is there any possibility that they were outside
Wales, over the border? I'm just wondering as you seem to think his
mother's name was Emma. If so, another lister will have to help as I
only have the Monmouth and Wales CD's for the 1881 census.
