Hello Coral
As has been mentioned in another reply, you can't get a birth certificate pre-1837, only an
entry from the parish record. Have you tried the IGI card indexes at your nearest FHL?
Families are often grouped together in the indexes. You may find there is a Caroline plus
her siblings and parents listed.
Don't forget to look at alternative spellings for SPERRING (remember SPENING from the
Marriage index?). E.g. in the VRI CD there is a Caroline SPEARING baptised 1810 in
Brighton, parents John and Lydia. And also listed with the same parents are:
Thomas 1802, Edmund 1805, John 1807, Henry Thomas 1812, John 1814, Sarah 1820
What happened to Caroline and Thomas after their marriage? Have you found them in
censuses - where? If they remained in MON, Gwent FHS is releasing indexed sections
of the 1851 census on fiche at a very reasonable price.

Hello Everyone. I have just received the marriage lines of THOMAS PHILLIPS and CAROLINE SPERRING who were married at Aberystruth Parish Church on 19th February 1833. but I am devistated to find there are no Parents names on it.and I have been searching for Carolines father. Can someone please tell me how do I find him now. I'm stuck I will have to find Carolines birthcertificate but the IGI only says about 1812 so I cant send for it until I know which quarter. Thank you for your time in reading this, Best wishes Coral
Does anyone have the following names in their research please?
JOHN REES MORGANS who married a ROSE BEARD and had 9 daughters
All were born at 57 Duke Street - house called HOMELEIGH and John was a collier overman
GWYNETH MORGANS - married RICHARD THOMAS
ANNIE MORGANS - married WALTER HANNEY - Children JEFF, SHEILA, DOREEN
HILDA MORGANS - married EMLYN COOPER - Children - JOHN, RAYMOND, IRENE
LENA MORGANS - married WILFRED WALBYOFF - Children GWYNN and WILFRED
ROSE MORGANS married ARTHUR BROWN - Son IAN
IRENE MORGANS - ?
DORIS MORGANS - ?
SYLVIA MORGANS - married VICTOR ? - Children ROSEMARY, CATHERINE
BLODWEN MORGANS - I know about her family downwards but not previous family
all lived in the Abertillery, Abergavenny area as far as I know.
The only JOHN REES MORGANS and ROSE(A) BEARD I can find on the 1881 census are:
If anyone has access to the 1891 census and could look for JOHN REES MORGANS and ROSE BEARD I would be very grateful.
JOHN MORGANS also had another daughter (my grandmother) ALICE MORGANS but it is possible she had a different mother and was born around 1891, and that mother could have died childbirth, so if someone can check the 1891 census to see if she is on it would be even more grateful as she seems to have disappeared into a deep hole somewhere!

Hello Listers,
I'd like to repost one of my interests.
William H TURNER was born at Shipton Moyne, Glos in 1874 to Agnes
Elizabeth TURNER (nee PARK) and Joseph Lucas TURNER. Shortly after his birth,
his father died. Agnes Elizabeth remarried and on the 1891 census is shown as
living at 313, 20th Row, Tredegar. With her is her husband Jonathan TURNER,
her sons Francis John TURNER age 17, her son William H TURNER (whom I am
researching),age 15, daughters Annie E Turner age 10, Agnes TURNER age 9,
Alice M TURNER age6, son Charles V TURNER and Henry I BARNES (lodger)
The 1901 census shows most of the same family living at 72, 313 Row,
Sirhowy, Tredegar. William H TURNER age 25 was married to Ada TURNER (nee?)
living at the same address. William H was given as a coal miner. He was
buried in 1907 at Cefn Golau cemetery aged 32.
I am looking for information on his wife Ada and any offspring that
they may have had. I would be very grateful for any information however small
to help me.
Many thanks,
Brian

Hi John!
Since your surname is Pritchard, and you have been researching people from
Dukestown, do you have any knowledge of Glyn Solomon Pritchard, born c.
1914 (+/-10 years)?
He was married to Edith Maud Price, nee Morgan, on 30th March, 1957 at the
Rock Chapel, Bedwellty, Mons (No. 145 in the Register Book of Marriages).
Well, you gotta take chances to learn anything, eh? ;-)
Kate.

Debbie,
Don't worry about getting bogged down. I was getting bogged down after
searching for a Bradford family in Dukestown in the period 1825-40 for more
than twelve months. Then recently, by sheer chance, I've discovered two new
branches of this family by discovering previously unknown married names of
daughters by connecting their first names and birthplace in Gloucestershire
in 1881 census.
I don't think our Lewis's are connected,
Best of luck,
John

Hello List,
My great grandfather was called Joseph LOTT and was born around 1841 in Pontypool. He was a puddler in the steel industry and moved up to West Hartlepool for work. His father was Thomas LOTT.
Anyone researching this name?
Sue
I too have Lewis ancestors from this area.
My G Grandmother, Mary Lewis (born 1844) and her husband John Llewellyn (her first cousin) lived in Six Bells and Llanhilleth during their married lives. Mary died in 1891 and is buried in Glandwr Baptist Chapel as are her parents, Robert Lewis(born around 1804) and Anne Llewellyn. Robert died 1877.
They originally came from Bedwellty and both the Lewis and Llewellyns were farmers.
Wendy
Debbie,
One error was mine. My Anne Lewis was born about 1848. My search Prices were
in Blaina and Nantyglo from 1850 but they are not related to the John Price
who married Anne Lewis.
Sorry about my mistake but I've not delved far into this Lewis connection.
Regards,
John

Hi Dawn,
Thanks for the input
To clarify Sarah Belt in the 1881 census she has a son named Rees Davies age
28 (born 1853) as well as named Belt children which makes the equation a
little more complicated. Either it was a previous marriage or an
illegitimate birth under her maiden name - whichever that makes the theory
of William the younger impossible - that is why I think William the elder is
the more likely candidate even though the age puts that in question as well.
The nearest William Belt in the 1881 census is one born around 1851 - which
suggests the 1845 William died or moved out of Wales. The John Belt you
mentioned also does not appear in 1881, well not by age that is, so John may
have had the same fate as William.
You are right about censuses 1851 and 1871, hoping someone reading this
maybe able to help if not then it's going to be a trip East as opposed to my
normal jaunt of West to Pembroke
Thanks again
Kevin

Dear Kevin,
Thought I'd mess around with the names and dates for a bit.
It seems your William BELT and 'possibly' Emma GREENLAND had two boys:
William BELT born Dec 1845
John BELT born Mar 1847
It MIGHT be more of a possibility that the William BELT that married
Sarah 'possibly DAVIES' in 1871 and had a child in 1873 could be the
William BELT born 1845.
If the child in 1873 is the child of:
William the Elder, he would have been about 56 (a bit old for a new start
with a new wife, but certainly not unheard of!)
William the Younger, he would have been about 26
(this is given an average marriage age of 23-25)
so you might need to check the 1851 census as well as the 1871 census.
It that area for mining, I have many widows in the family as early as
7-10 years after marriage. They didn't care for their workers very well.
Now, that is assuming that he was a miner, of course.
What do you think of that possibility? Both roads could definitely lead
back to Pembroke.
Bye for now,
Dawn

I have just found a Lewis connection on my Lane tree. I hope this is of use
to somebody. This line also came from around the Llanhilleth area.
Hannah Lane 1885 - 1940 Christchurch = William Charles Brown 1887 Chew
Stoke-1930 Christchurch, Aberbeeg, Mon. They were married in 1909
Christchurch.
Their children were Ellen Hannah Nancy Brown 1910 Christchurch - 1960
Barnett, William Gwyn Brown 1912 Christchurch - 1952 Barnet and Alfred John
Brown 1918-1920.
William married Hilda May Lewis 1914 Christchurch - 1997 Barnet. I have two
children listed for them
Jillian Brown 1942 Barnet and Pamela Brown 1944. Pamela married into the
Roberts family.

Thanks for the welcome Dawn
I have had 2 replies on my Belt posting - one with a badtrans virus and one
from yourself, not bad for your first try on the list eh!
Anyway the William Belt I am looking for I think married twice, firstly in
1840 to an Emma Greenland (based on process of elimination with the help of
Free BMD and Sarah, possibly nee Davies) who appears in the 1881 and 1891
census as a widow. I think the key would be 1871 as Sarah gave birth to a
child around 1873. As you know I am trying to link this line of Belts into
my Pembrokeshire clan and I believe this William may be the key if his
stated county of birth in any of the censuses is Pembrokeshire.
Thanks for the reply Dawn,
Regards
Kevin

Hello Kevin,
Welcome to the Bla'Gwent list ;-)
Do you know at this point who Mr. William BELT/BELTH married?
(Somewhat Serious question)
I double checked the 1861 census of Monmouthshire, Aberystruth
Sub-District just in case and no BELTs, only one Thomas BELCH - who you
probably don't want to be your ancestor anyway (put those bad manners
away!) (Not so serious question)
For those of you who think I'm giving Kevin a rather hard time, I am!
But he's the best Taff you'd ever want to kid around with!!!
BTW, thank you for answering my ALSOP/PALMER query. You're right about
the 1881, cost me $6.98 delivered! Smart chappie you are ;-)
Bye for now,
Dawn (as in the CALLEN sort of way)

When typing a surname? YES! Absolutely! A must! For general text? NO!
It's shouting and bad Netiquette besides being quite hard to read.

The 1881 census shows, at Rassau, Llangunidr, William Williams, coal miner aged 24, born Rhymney, Mon.
Margarett Williams, wife, 20, born Brecknock.
Could SKS look them up on the 1891 census please.
