Thanks very much Pam. This is the right family. I believe three brothers
moved to Llantillio Portholey - Samuel, James and John. Samuel was a
blacksmith, John a Farmer, and James a Cornmiller. My ancestor was John.
I bought a little book a few days ago 'Stone and Steam in the Black
Mountain' by the Rev D A Tipper. I found a passage referring to Dick Duggan
son of James -
Miller Dick Duggan ground oats and barley for cattle folder, also wheat for
bread. Dick was a 'regular' at the Globe, so regular in fact that he often
spent a week or a fortnight at the pub. Meanwhile work piled up. It was not
until the noise of the machinery was heard that villagers knew that Dick was
back at work.
Dick's habit lives on in later generations but for rather shorter visits. My
Duggan married a Roderick(possibly related to the John Rodrick - the devils
own son, you mentioned in a previous message)!!
best wishes
Richard Baker

Hello Angela
The family of David WILLIAMS is living at 7 Sychfos Row, Ebbw Vale in 1881 and
1891. There are no ROSE or WILCOX families in this street in either census.
The parish is Bedwellty.

Hello Pat
I simply used the "wild card" option. I entered James H*, his age and place of
birth and - there he was! The wild card is a very useful option which I always
use if the "real" name can't be found. E.g. I could have entered H*s, or
H*ins, H*ings, or even *kins and possibly would have had the same result.

Thankyou so much. I thought I had tried everything. Must admit, I had never thought of HAWKINS as a misspelling of HOSKINS but this entry certainly looks promising, and would be well worth a check of the original.

I am wondering if anyone on the list recalls, or is familiar in any way with the following family
James HOSKINS born Blaina abt 1852 and married Mary MORGAN born Newbridge abt 1852.
Children known: Daniel born abt 1880 Crumblin, Maud born abt 1882 Blaina, William born abt 1884 Blaina, Blodwen born 1886 Blaina, Martha born abt 1888 Blaina, Gwenllian born abt 1891 Blaina and possibly another daughter Mary born after 1891
I have the family on the 1891 census in Gladstone St Blaina. I have had no luck in locating them on the 1881 census.
The family were still in Gladstone St in 1913 when Blodwen married Robert Perry EVANS.
I was wondering if any of either families (Hoskins & Evans) were still in the Blaina or Abertillery areas, or of anyone can add furthur.
Many thanks

Hello Jean:
Someone living at Kendal Furnace could be in different parishes and counties
depending on what side of the river you were on. I believe the Ebby River
was the boundary between Llangattock and Bedwellty parish. (Please if I am
wrong on this someone tell me.) The town of Beaufort and Beaufort Hill are
considered LLangattock parish. If you go a little further west of Beaufort
it could be LLangynidr parish. Beaufort Iron Works is found on Bedwellty 1841
census but several residential areas near the works such as Waun Goch are in
Llangattock/Beaufort.
When looking for a certificate, I would check Crickhowell Registration
District and also Aberystruth/Abergavenny (not quite sure which one).
Good luck
Georgia
Steffan:
Thank you so very much for the information. It was exactly what I was
looking for. You suggested purhasing "A History of Ebbw Vale" and I will
certainly look into it. Is there information regarding the Beaufort Iron
Works in the early years contained in the above noted history as I have found
it quite difficult locating any records prior to 1830. Would you happen to
know where the "Capel" was located? Was it considered to be Llangattock or
Bedwellty parish for purpose of reviewing church warden accounts? Has
anyone ever reviewed the petty or quarter sessions for mention of this
parish? Sorry for all the questions but I am extremely interested in this
topic.
Again, your assistance is greatly appreciated.

In Georgia's listing re: Beaufort Iron Works, she had the following
sentence:
>>Two children christened Wes Meth Circ Book 1821 and
>>1823 listing Kendal Furnace as residence.
I have been looking for Kendal Furnace for some time. I have an
ancestor who had been living in Merthyr Tydfil with her son's family in
the 1851 census, they were no longer there in 1861. She was buried at
St. Tydfil, Merthyr T. and there was an entry in the register that her
abode was "Kendal".
Can anyone tell me in which county &/or registration district this was
in 1857? I have been unable to find a death certificate for her by
trying all kinds of entries in the Index to the Civil Register. I even
tried Kendal, Westmoreland!
Happy hunting,

Jean,
There was just a post on this from Steffan which may help you:
Beaufort is sometimes listed under Breconshire (county), other times
under the Monmouthshire County label. The diocese is Llandaff, I'm not
sure about the parish for Church of England records, I believe just
Beaufort Parish. The old name for Beaufort is "Y-Cendl- Beaufort" as
Steffan's post below will explain. Many in the area at that time were
Non-conformists (Methodist, Baptists, Independents, etc.) which have
their own records, unfortunately scattered through circuits or circular
routes a minister would make to tend to his flock.
Here is the post:

Subject: Re: Beaufort Iron Works
Very little survives, regarding the Ironworks at Beaufort until it was
taken
over by the Baileys in the 1830s. The entrepreneur who first established
the
works was Edward Kendall and in Welsh the village was named after him -
Cendl. This name appears on some maps of the earlier period. It may be
worth
keeping an eye out for this name in your researches. Kendall and the
owners
of the neighbouring Sirhowy works funded a school which was called Capel
Waunpond. It was called Capel (chapel) as it was licensed for Anglican
church services to be held there. The Reverend Benjamin Price was both
schoolmaster and rector.
Although out of print, you would do well to get hold of the following
book
(from which most of the above came) -
'A History of Ebbw Vale' - Arthur Gray-Jones. 1970. Starling Press.

There was an enquiry about Chapel's/Churches, in Carmel Beaufort. There is a church, 'St Davids' in Carmeltown Ebbw Vale. I dont know when it was built, but it is open today. It has its own cemetery. Hope it will help, good luck.

It is Vital Records INDEX, not the actual records, and at this stage the only country available is Mexico. I suspect not much use to many of as as yet. I am wondering what will come as we have 3 or 4 Vital Records Indexes available thru the LDS Church.

Hello Georgia and Dawn
These circuit churches led me a merry dance when I first started my research.
I *knew* where my family were based in Monmouth but the LDS showed them as all
being baptised/married either in Pont-Morlais English Wesleyan Church, Merthyr
Tydfil or St Tydfil's, MT. It wasn't until I discovered the "circuit" church
system that I realised why my further searches in MT weren't producing any
results!
An example is a child that was listed as baptised "Pont-Morlais English
Wesleyan, Merthyr Tydfil" in the IGI is noted in the actual register as "first
to be baptised in the new chapel, Bedwellty" in 1825.
