Hi Rita, I am quite interested in your SMITH's of Blaina and surrounds,
maybe not connected, but a chance not to be missed. I have SMITH's around
the Heads of the Valleys, My gggrandfather was from Pontypool, he married a
COLEMAN from Blaina/Brynmawr, I do not know whether any of his siblings came
from Pontypool as well or whether the family moved over in search of work.
This particular SMITH, William, his son William married the COLEMAN, Mary,
they had several children, one of which, Sarrah Hannah, may have been born
when her mother was about 14/15 years old. This family eventually moverd
over to Bedwelty, where we have them on the 1881 census living in the High
Street, and Mary is transcribed as May, they eventually emmigrated to
Australia in 1887. Any assistance would be wonderfully received,
kind regards Mick McAllister

Came across Ann Woosman aged 102 from Rhymney, Monmouthshire while
transcribing St Davids Rhymney, Church of Wales burials. Has to be quite
a record for those times. The Church opened in 1843 and this is the
first centenarian I have come across. Any takers? Haven't researched the
name, where could she have came from? Montgomery and Shropshire have
those surnames on 1881 census.
The Church has photos of all 12 vicars since 1843. It is quite
significant that the curate ( clerical assistant) carried out the
majority of burials in the Vicar's ( incumbent's) absence.
This graveyard at one time must have been real beautiful. It is as most
graveyards around, choked with Japanese Knotweed and bramble bush, etc.
The current Vicar tells me there may be plans to landscape the
Churchyard which would make it a great attraction as the Church is
central Rhymney and the Church is such a magnificent building.

Hello, I recently offered to look up the NBI for fellow listers.
since then I have realised there are copyright restrictions on this so
am withdrawing my offer, with apologies and regret.
I think it is safe to say that almost everybody asking for help would be
disappointed as most people on this list need information about the
Blaina/Nantyglo area and there are no entries on the index from this
part of Monmouthshire or the surrounding area.

Wow that is getting up there for those days, I thought it was good when I
came across one of my twigs from Oxford and he was 96. You haven't
happened to come across John Roberts buried end of June 1883, according to
the newspaper report he was laid to rest in the Rhymney church burial
grounds.

G'day all, Would a member be able to look up the following reference in the above census for me? The ref is Abertillery 3997 141 04 and applies to James Lodge and family. Any help would be appreciated. Helen in Australia.
Hi Folks
Was browsing in an antique store yesterday and found an old photo album with
quite a lot of photos dating from 1875. Several of them were taken by a
professional photographer from Plymouth and some of the subjects were
named - Harrison, Williamson and what could be Derwent. There were other
names and dates. If necessary I am willing to go back and make notes.
This message has been sent to London, Midmarch, Leicestershire and
BlaenauGwent lists. Please pass it on to other mailing lists if you think it
is appropriate to do so (let other's know you have done so and to which
lists!).
The shop was asking around 200 NZD which is about 80 USD or 60 GBP. I would
be willing to arrange purchase and shipment.
Replies off list please.
Cheers

Hello Don,
I have been told this week that Siloh registers have not
survived....****!!!!. The secretary Mr Rees has told me that membership
lists have survived however, but I am still waiting to hear from him.
My Rees families were members for sure as I have newspaper cuttings
circa 1905 to show this and his affiliation to Siloh which was a Welsh
Baptist.
The original Siloh was on the Sirhowy riverbank, opposite Bethel Baptist
which is an English one back 1760's I believe.
Janet, the head librarian at Tredegar is awaiting Mr Rees's call for
confirmation of membership. I will keep you in touch.

Brenda, Gwent.

Hello Dale,
The Monmouthshire burial list is as Majorie say's are very sparse to say
the least!
It obviously helps to know what religious denomination they were of
course;)
There are a number of possibilities. Thomas Lewis would more likely be
buried in the Municipal cemetery at Pontypool ( Torfaen). After 1850's
when it was decreed people were to be buried in these Municipal
cemeteries.
The exceptions were that if your family were buried in a Church or
Chapel graveyard, you were entitled to be buried there as a general
rule. I am transcribing a certain Church of Wales (formerly C of E)
burials in Gwent ( now Glamorgan) where the graveyard was closed to
burials in 1977. The closure date varies from different graveyards.
Your 'crazy' requests represent the 'normal' requests that we have at
Gwent FHS. Trevethin (Pontypool) represented a large area in 1860. It
was possible hence that Thomas, Mary or David and their wives were
buried in Church/ Chapel graveyards.
Have you indications of these denominations. We have Monumental
Inscriptions of Trevethin. etc. Any idea what areas and what census's
and areas you have found them on? It will be a bit of a lottery to match
up the family unless you give the research you have already plus any
religious traits, etc. i.e. Baptist, Church of Wales, Methodist,
Presbyterian, etc., etc.
best wishes,
Brenda, Gwent.

Hi All
As I seem to have struck out on My John Roberts d. 1883 Rhmney Churchyard perhaps SKS will have a look for my Harriet Masters b. 1812 died sometime after the 1891 census and also her husband James MASTERS b. 1808 also died sometime after the 1891 census.
Believed to be C of E and were last living on Wynne Hoel Street in Pontlottyn, Glams.
Any help appreciated... Thank you.

Hello Dave
1881-1900 was a period when many streets were renamed, knocked down
or amalgamated into others, which changed their numbering etc.
In 1881 the GEORGE family were at 31 Queen Street and the BURR
family at 47. However, in 1891 there is no 47 that I could find - in
fact some houses are not numbered at all. It might be best if you
send me name details of your JAMES and LEWIS families so that I can
look for them by name.

Hi Dave Lewis, I am interested in you LEWIS connections from Tredegar, we
have a Rachel SMITH that married into a LEWIS family that eventually paved
the way for her family to migrate to Queensland Australia, our SMITH's were
around Bedwelty in the 1881 census, so assume the LEWIS's were as well. The
LEWIS's emigrated in 1878, and the SMITH's in 1887, any help would be
appreciated, kind regards Mick McALlister

ADMIN Forward!
To send a message to a list use BlaenauGwent-L(a)rootsweb.com. The
*-request* is ONLY added to the address and/or the "L" is changed to a
"D" for Digest when subscribing or unsubscribing. Using either
instead of the correct List posting address above *will* delay your
message since it must first bounce to the List Admin who, in turn,
must forward it to the List. Double-check before you post!

NO Virus warnings, seasonal greetings or private 'chit-chat' on this

of those we seek goes, but MUST be kept within the *List's Golden Rule*.

Dear Dave Southwood, Re your enquiry 'Rigby' family. I am aware of present
day Rigbys living in Brynmawr. Please contact me direct if I can assist.
Cheers Ray Hapgood.
Dear All,
Apologies for the cross-postings - getting desperate.
Once upon a time (1738), an action was raised in the Chancery Division, which concerned
four properties or estates, said to be in the Breconshire of *1500* or so. They were:
Gelli Lydan (or Gellilydan); said to be 1 1/2 miles from Hay-on-Wye
Gelle Gandryll (known to be the name for Hay-on-Wye)
Plas Ddu (there must be many of these)
Castell Hedyn
I know of a Gellilydan near Maentwrog, MER, but it doesn't fit the "1 1/2 miles from Hay"
description by a country mile! Can anyone identify any of the three 'unknowns', please? A
Google search has raised nothing relevant.
Cheers,
Trevor (York,UK)
