Hello
I am trying to find information on my gt gt grandfathers family,as far as I
know he was one of five children born to John and Mary Bates in Nantyglo in
1831.The other children were Elizabeth,Mary Anne,Jane and William.I know John
and William ended up here in Blaenavon, but have'nt been able to find where
their parents or any of the other children went to.
On 1841 census they were in Blaenant Aberstruyth
Mary Bates age 35 born not Mon
Elizabeth Bates age 15 born Mon
Mary Anne Bates age 8 born Mon
Jane Bates age 6 born Mon
William Bates age 12 born Mon
John Bates age 10 born Mon
I know from Johns's marriage cert his fathers name was John Bates occ,
puddler, but not down as deceased, why was'nt he on this census.I have not
been able to find John, Mary or any of the daughters on later census, or any
birth or marriage records.I would be glad of any help and information, maybe
they are in your family ( hopefully ).
Thanks
Jim.
L/C WYNDHAM LEWIS 20992 name is among the "NAMES OF THE FALLEN" on the War Memorial at Abertillery which is more or less adjacent to Queen Street. He was indeed with the South Wales Bord. The unveiling and dedication of this memorial took place on Wednesday 1 December 1926 at 2.3 pm. In memory of the MEN of ABERTILLERY who made the supreme sacrifice in THE GREAT WAR 1914 - 1918.
The war memorial is still there and is kept in good condition. On the day close relatives with blue tickets were allowed into the enclosure. The unveiling was by FIELD-MARSHALL The VISCOUNT ALLENBY G.C.B; G.C.M.B. The dedication by the Rev. W. L. HARRIS, B.A; B.D; Hon Chaplain of the forces, Vicar of Abertillery.
I should imagine the Battalion war diary would be held at the Public Record Office Ruskin Avenue, Kew, RICHMOND Surrey. The published Battalion history, should be at The Imperial War Museum, Lambeth Road LONDON, SE1
6HZ. They would be able to look up the battle that took place at the time and what battle line Wyndham was in - being a L/C there might even be a mention of his name. If Wyndham has no known grave then his name would be commemorated on various war memorials.
He would most certainly of been awarded the "British War Medal" and the "Victory Medal" - there could also be others. There would also of been a bronze plaque - inscribed "He died for freedom and honour" with his name inscribed on same
If you want the address to locate campaign and service awards or gallantry awards then mail me.
Hi listers, is thre sks that could check the 1871 census for me, for a COLEMAN family living in Blaina/Brynmawr, there may be a Mary, daughter, approx age 13-14 years old. Or maybe the 1861, similar area, where she would be approx 3-4 years old. Many tia and regards Mick McAllister

A reply to Evan Williams,
I visited Blaina Heritage Centre (in the Council Offices) couple of weeks
ago and had a good time looking through their records and having a good
natter with people there about old Blaina and Nantyglo. If you are close by
and can get there its worth a visit. They have a copy of the 1871 census
there and I'm you'd find Forge Row and the occupants of that time listed. I
had family living at 82, Forge Row in 1851. I'm not sure where the row of
houses was but it is most likely that the houses were in a street that led
to a nearby forge or perhaps had a forge behind them. The houses may have
belonged to the forge owners originally, for occupation by employees and
their families. The houses would not have forges in them.
You would also find listings for Forge Row in later census, (1881 and 1891).
Like much of old Blaina I expect that Forge Row has been demolished with new
developments built on the old site. There not much left of old Cwm Celyn but
some of the cottages in Club Row are still there, sadly not no.15, which I
was looking for.
If you can get access to the 1881 census on CD and can get someone to help
you search it I'm sure you could "almost walk down" the streets as you'd
see the street names, all the houses and their occupants listed (not that
you'd have known them; you might know their descendants some of whom may
still be in Nantyglo). Wherever you are you should find out where your local
Records Office is - they should have the 1881 national census on CD; some
large libraries hold a copy too. They will have the facilities to allow you
to search.
Best wishes,
John.

Greetings from Australia,
Can sks assist with any information regarding a ROSSITER family
circa 1929-1933 in Cwmdos.
Thanks in Advance

Look at where the wife was born. Commonly marriages would be where the
female's 'home' was, but not always.

Can anyone help?
I've found these two relatives on the 1881 census for Bedwellty at 3
Butchers Court.
William Watkins
Elizabeth Watkins
+ 3 kids, William, John and Emily
Thus, the two adults were both born in 1843 ish...
However, I can't seem to find a marriage reference, any birth certification
etc. Can someone have a look at the 1871, 1861 census for this area and see
if they can find either of them and atleast then I might be able to pinpoint
a date for when they may have got married. I don't know what else to do...
any suggestions?

Bill,
Your story is of interest. I also stopped at the Bethlehem Wesleyan Chapel
and the minister I met, living next door at "The Manse", was probably the
same person who took you to the Siloam Chapel site!
I'll let you know if I find any more on the chapel.

Hi list, could sks check a Parish Record for me please.
The christening of COLEMAN, Mary Ann, daughter of John and Ellen, around November 1857 in Blaina. TIA and regards Mick McAllister
Hi Rita
Many thanks - I quite prepared to get the films, but I'm currently going
through the 1891 census for Herefordshire and I don't know exactly where to
look in Merthyr. I know that a William married in the Merthyr BMD district
in 1856 and then there were two children born in Q3-1857 (twins?) called
William & Elizabeth It looks like Elizabeth died at birth, then in Q3 1859 a
Harriet was born in Merthyr district. The next child was born in Llantilio
Pertholey in 1863, so a lot depends on when they moved into the Monmouth
area. I only recently realised that these chilldren were probably born to a
William & Elizabeth I already knew about from the IGI and the 1881 & 1891
census. I want to find them in 1861 or 1871 to check where they say they
were born - the 1881 & 1891 census gives different places.
If you find any other Exton's or Exon's whilst searching i would be very
interested in them as well, but I have no positive proof that any were in
the Merthyr area in 1861.
Thanks again.

I thought this might be of interest to John, St. Helens, Merseyside:
About 10 years ago my wife, daughter and I wandered the hills around Brynmawr
and LLanelly looking for the Siloam Chapel. We wandered up this narrow road
till we happened by the Bethelhem Manse on Maes-y-gwartha road out of
Gilwern. We stopped and were royally entertained by Pastor Howard Foster of
that church who invited us in for tea with his lovely wife and then took us
up the harrowing road about 45 miles per hour till we reached the old
graveyard. Yes the church was gone and the bury grounds about as you
described them. The Pastor called around to some in his parish he thought
might help us--My great grandfather and grandmother were married in the
Siloam Chapel in 1870-- but, alas, they felt all the old chapel records had
been destroyed--a fire, or something. We spent a lovely day and gained very
little genealogy. I would love to have you share any info you might obtain
on old records. Your note brought back pleasant memories of a lovely area.
Best wishes
