Hello Listers,
I have a most unusual name (for Wales) in my ancestry. I am having a
difficult time finding any information about this family as the name is
probably French. Is there anyone out there on the list that could help me
to understand if there might have been prisoners of the Napoleonic Wars
(circa 1800-1815) who would have been imprisoned in Wales? The family name,
by the way, is AUBERT.
Thanks, in advance and in anticipation, for your responses.

Brynmawr is now in Blaenau Gwent. However, in 1861 it was in Breconshire. It
was, at that time, a part of the ecclesiastical parish of Llanelley (Hill).

Dear Listers,
Does anyone now in Tredegar know of any Lewises who were jewelers; any LEWIS
who has or knows of a relative, Gwen Williams Lewis?
Just came across a bit of information which might help me find some of my
Williams cousins. In a letter written by John Bennett in 1904 from Sirhowy
to my g. grandfather Evan Williams in the US, he says "your brother Alfred
comes to Tredegar sometimes to see his daughter Gwen. I expect that you have
heard that Gwen is married to a son of Mr. Lewis, jeweler, and they have a
shop on the left side of Commercial Road." In a later undated letter, c.
1920s or 30s, of Alfred to Evan, he mentions a son, John Lewis, who had been
in the Air Force.
Are there any descendants of John there, now living?
Are there any directories of the early 1900s - after 1904? I'm aware of the
1901 Kelly's online. I found there Lewis, John, watch maker & ironmonger, on
Queen Street
Lewis, John Richard, registrar of marriages for the Tredegar district, 2
Richmond terrace
Lewis William, draper, 33 Commercial Road [does draper refer to clothing?]
The watch maker sounds likely to me though he is then on Queen Street.
Would appreciate any suggestions and / or help!

Dear Ian,
there is a William Moseley buried in the churchyard in Wyre Piddle, nr
Evesham, England. I know because my friend and I were there looking for
her Hobbs family. We found a huge stone covered in a half-foot
thickness of ivy and spent ages fighting our way through it, in case
sod's law kicked in, and this was our Hobbs family. It wasn't, it was
William Moseley - his name has become a catch-word between us for hard
work resulting in frustration in geneaology!
Incidentally, her Hobbs family were about four gravestones up, perfectly
illegible and without ivy!
Yours
Jo

Anne,
For genealogical purposes Machen is probably best described as being in
Monmouthshire (which became Gwent, hence the Gwent Family History Society
and Gwent Record Office). Machen is in two parts: a large village called
Machen with an industrial past, and a small rural village (which runs an
annual arts festival) called Lower Machen. Both are in the Rhymney Valley,
and on the road (A468) from Newport to Caerphilly. (Machen is no longer in
Monmouthshire or Gwent but in Caerphilly District.)

Greetings
I would like to draw attention to the message board which I have recently put up through Rootsweb. This board is devised to help family historians with accommodation at no cost when they want to research away from home. Having been in this situation myself and overwhelmed by the cost of even the most modest accommodation (Australian dollar at an all time low!) I thought that some of us with a spare bedroom would be quite happy to exchange the use of that room with another family researcher whether intercity, interstate or international.
The idea is that the 'host' earns credits for the amount of time that the 'guest' stays with them and can redeem these credit points later. At the same time they can offer their 'guest' their local expertise such as where are the various repositories or even local transport information.
Some people have suggested that as they live in a remote area or an obscure village no-one would want to do family research there which might well be true - however I am sure that some family researchers might like to visit those areas even if it is just to lie in the sun, ski the slopes or surf the waves while they take time out to think how to solve some of their research problems and maybe talk it over with their family researcher 'host'.
Yes, I know that there is a problem that so many of us would want to go to Ireland but let's give it a try anyway.
You will find the site at :
http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/Special/AccommodationExchange
Do read Welcome messages #1 and #2. Feel free to add this address to your website.
All the best

Hello all.
My thanks to David Wilkinson for telling me that the map of most interest to
the BG list - 1793 north west - had a bad link. Oddly it worked fine in
Front Page but not it seems on the web.
It's fixed now. Try again:

My g-grandmother was Elizabeth VAUGHAN b. about 1872 - said to be 'from
Trelech' (Trelleck), died 1908 in Cardiff.
Her father was John Charles VAUGHAN 1839-1901, buried "Big Cemetery",
Merthyr Rd., Abergavenny, mother was Mary. John Charles's father was William
VAUGHAN 1793-1892, mother also Mary.
At times the John Charles family lived at Railway Inn, Brecon Rd.,
Abergavenny and at Primrose House, Park St., Abergavenny. Johgn Charles
possibly worked on the Indian Railway.
1881 census has this family as a possible although there are some
inconsistencies as to John Charles's age, wife, etc.
