Hi Phil Roderick and John Wynne,
I showed your questions about Oakdale to my mum today. She was born and grew
up at Rhoswen House the Rock, Near Oakdale. Her father , who is now 95 years
old worked at Oakdale pit all his life. They had quite a lot of family
friends down the Cwm. She's going to ask him about the Dram and will let me
know what he has to say. He is a Carey and his wife was a Hemming
Will let you know what he has to say.

My husbands ggrandfather Abel JAMES was born in Somerset but moved to
Wales before marrying Elizabeth LEONARD about 1867. They had 10 children
born in Trevethin and Ebbw Vale. The 8th child was Worthy JAMES born at
Colliery Cottages, Manmoel, Ebbw Vale in 1884. Abel died 18 Nov 1925,
Elizabeth died 3 Mar 1922 and they are buried at Court-y-Bella
Churchyard. Abel's mother Harriet HANCOCK JAMES was also living in the
area at the time of the 1881 census along with several of his brothers.
I have some information about ancestors and descendants of this family
and would be interested in hearing from anyone else who might have a
connection to them or information about them..

Hi Merryanne,
I checked the 1871 census today for Powell Row to see who from the Price
family were left there. The census was taken in April so thats nearly a
month after the explosion. this is what I found-
40 Powell Row
Eliza Price Widow Head 48 years born Rhymney
Anne Price Dght 20 Ebbw Vale
Mary Price " 13 "
David Price son 8 "
Elizabeth Price Dght 5 "
These are the only Price family left in Pwell row and are probably the
family of Jonathan as he was 50 when he died. John Price was his son. I can
check the 1881 census for you to see if I can find David or his sister
Elizabeth for you if you would like. Let me know,
Regards ,

The village was created early this century specifically to house miners
working at the new Oakdale Colliery (pit). I have not heard of the pit
being referred to as anything except "Oakdale pit" My grandfather &
father worked there until the early 1960s.

I have a birth certificate dated 1858 of SARAH ANN LLEWELLYN which quotes the place of birth as Great Western, Brynmawr.
The Father ZEPHANIAH LLEWELLYN's occupation was stated as Publican.
Would anyone know what Great Western was?
The name of the Pub?
The street name? - I cannot find any mention in 1861 census?
Was it a pit?
I think it was too early for the railway to have an influence.
Has anyone come across the father - despite his distinctive name I have been unable to find anything of him at the GRO or in census records? There are two possibles in the IGI.
John Jenkins
I am new to this list. I am just starting to trace my Price roots. My great
grandfather, Thomas John Price, was born in Tredegar on November 11, 1866. He
had a step-brother, George Crumpton, but I do not know what other siblings he
may have had. He came to America and settled in Scranton, Pennsylvania, but I
do not know when he came here, and what family came with him. I have a tea
set that was always passed down to the oldest son in this family. I was told
it was used on New Year's Eve for tea and fruitcake. I do not know how for
how many generations it was passed on, I do know it is very old. Thomas
married Elizabeth Allan, b. May 22, 1868 in Glasgow, Scotland. Again, I do
not know if he was married at home and they both came here together, or
whether they met in this country. Thomas John Price, Sr. was a painter and a
paperhanger here, and I assume that is what he did in Wales, but I may be
wrong. Family stories tell of how people came from all over to watch him
paint scenery in the Scranton theater(s). He was able to do things like paint
a tree with the brush in his right hand while he painted something entirely
different with his left hand. Any information anyone has or will look up is
greatly appreciated.

John,
I have some information for you on Zephania Llewellyn. He was born on
28.09.1824 at Hafodtrisglod, Bedwellty. His parents were John Llewellyn
(collier) and Susannah. This is from the parish registers of St. Sannen,
Bedwellty.
I too have Llewellyn ancestors from Hafodtrisglod (spelt several different
ways) but cannot prove that he is related to mine.
I have some more information which I would be glad to pass on to you re
Hafodtrisglod.

Thank you

Good day all,
I am trying to find my Mothers birthplace, supposedly in Rhymney, on a
map. Her birth registration certificate gives the address as 16 Back of
Mount Pleasant, Rhymney, the registration district is Bedwellty, sub
district is Rhymney Valley. Doesn't sound much like a street, but as it
has a number I guess it must be. Is it still there today? I realise that
this came under Monmouth at that time, but is now in Glamorgan.
Is anyone else researching in the Rhymney area, my ancesters seem to
have remained in this area for some time, mostly making use of St.
Davids Church in Rhymney for religeous ceremonies. I am interested in
PRICE, JONES and DEATH in the Rhymney area. My great grandfather Morgan
Rees DEATH married Mary Ann JONES (b. Rhymney) in 1893, and my
grandfather Richard Benjamin PRICE married Catherine DEATH( b. Rhymney)
in 1915.
Any insight would be much appreciated.

Just to put you straight before you can't find a Handborough in
Oxfordshire - there isn't one. BUT there is a Church Hanborough and a
Long Hanborough both approx 15 miles NW of Oxford.
If you need to trace the family through parish records (I am presuming
you are not local - apologies if you are) they are at the Oxford Central
Library and I can do some looking if you would like.
Good hunting

PS I also have a WOODWARD in my tree but only as the husband of my
father's cousin (!) from Tredegar born about 1900 I would think. Plus
my aunt married a William (Bill) HEARD from Cardiff and he was born
about 1924.

Hi all
My great grandfather was James Woodward who was signalman at Pontymister
Risca in the late 1800's. The 1891 census shows him at Station Cottage
Pontymister, Risca.
I am trying to find more about him - when he started and where he came from
(he was born in Handborough Oxfordshire in 1850).
If anyone has records that relate to Risca station at that time I would
like to make contact.
