Hi,
I am a new subscriber to the list. My name is Evon Williams and I am
looking for information on SAMUEL HARRIS married to HARRIET RUGMAN
around about the early 1800's in WALES. SAMUEL was born in
REDWICK,MONMOUTHSHIRE, WALES married HARRIET RUGMAN then emigrated to
AUSTRALIA on the ESMERALDA in 1875. I think he was a farmer. He had 3
sons, GEORGE, SAMUEL and ALFRED. I was wondering if any kind person
would be able to look up the 1871 census to see if they can find this
family for me please.
I have information on the family from when they arrived in AUSTRALIA.
SAMUEL HARRIS was my great great grandfather.
Thanks in advance

NEW SOUTH WALES, AUSTRALIA
Hello all,
Looking for assistance in finding birth/baptism of my Grandfather
Richard Benjamin PRICE. At the time of his marriage he was living in the
'top end' of Rhymney, according to my Mother, where they mainly all
spoke Welsh. Whereas my Grandmother was in a part of Rhymney where they
spoke English. She was born in 1894, so I think he must have been born
around 1890.
Thanks,
Cathy
Hello all,
A while back someone mentioned the South Wales Borderers. As often
happens, I passed this by, having no concern about the subject at the
time. I now find that my maternal grandfather, Richard Benjamin PRICE,
was in this, before later in life becoming a coal hewer. Is anyone able
to give me any information on them, or at least point me in the right
direction.
Thanks,
Cathy
Hi. Thought some may find this helpful. Hope So.

Hello Marilyn and Gordon
The reason you can't find the section of the 1861 census covering Crumlin is
because it is missing. This MON census has MANY pages missing including Piece
No.4026 Folios 61-85 which include Crumlin.

Morgan was born in Crumlin in 1865, to Henry Morgan and Prudence
Jones. If you get any responses could you let me have a copy? Best

My great-grandfather JOHN EDWIN VAUGHAN was born at CRUMLIN, Mynyddyslwyn
June 4th, 1859. His parents were JOHN VAUGHAN and ELIZABETH THOMAS. I 'm
having trouble locating an 1861 Census containing Crumlin. Does anyone know
a film number or a reference that I could use to locate the census. I'm a
long way from an LDS Centre so any help would be appreciated. I would love
to make a Vaughan or Thomas connection and also learn about Crumlin and
area.
Thank you,

Good morning-
I have a couple of Monmouthshire questions I am hoping someone out there can
answer!
* I know the village of Sirhowy exsists (NE a bit from Tredegar, according to
the streetmap.co.uk) Does anyone know this village personally? I would love
to hear from you!
* Does anyone know what parish Sirhowy would have been in around 1835-1850?
Bedwelty parish? Tredegar parish?
* Was the Welsh Baptist church common around 1835-1850?
*Does anyone know of a Welsh Baptist church in/ around the Sirhowy village
area 1835-1850?
* Can someone please tell me how to pronounce the name Letitia? Lay-tish-ah?
Let-ti-ah?
Thank you very much!

Are you certain that Rachel's parents came from Wales? There was very little
Welsh migration to what is now the USA between the years 1720 and 1795. I
would start looking in Pennsylvania, probably the Welsh Barony for her
ancestor. Check books written by Glenn and Browning on the Welsh
Immigration
to Pennsylvania. Many of these settlers came from Llanbrynmair,
Montgomeryshire and were Quakers. Others came from Glamorgan and other
places in Wales. The descendants of your VA ancestor could have come very
early. However, where in VA do you have him? If he is west of the Blue
Ridge Mountains, he probably came from Pennsylvania or New Jersey. If he is
east of those mountains, look to the Tidewater area of Virginia. Those
immigrants came very early to America. If they are Tidewater, look at Peter
Wilson Coldham's books on the emigrants. I don't have the titles handy but
they are in most major genealogical libraries. He lists where the immigrant
came from.

The books by Peter Wilson Coldham are the Complete Book of Emigrants, a
series of 4 volumes: Volume 1: 1607-1660; Volume 2, 1661-1699, Volume 3
1700-1750 and Volume 4 1751-1776.
They are good books.

dear Bryan,
I walked along Gold Tops today when I was coming home from a fruitless
visit to the council offices. Because of your message I took particular
note of the way the buildings were numbered.
They start on the left hand side - from Stanley Road - and number up one
side and down the other - St Marks Church, which was built at the turn
of the century, is between numbers 6 and 7. So many of the original
houses have been demolished and office buildings have replaced them that
it was difficult to say exactly where your building would have been. All
the original buildings are HUGE houses with 7 or 8 bedrooms plus attic
rooms for the servants. If you like I can look up Gold Tops in the Johns
Directory for NEwport the next time I go to the Library - this might be
about 10 days or so - I am intrigued by this now.

Tia,
St Woollos is the Cathedral in Newport, which was in Monmouthshire in
1881. There is also a St Woollos Hospital in the town. Gold Tops in
the name of a street very close to the Civic Centre in Newport. I have
no idea what the significance of 1 St Sa is.
Incidentally, Woollos is the English form of Gwynllyw, an early Welsh
saint-king from the Newport area. Wentloog, the area between Cardiff
and Newport, is Gwynllwg in Welsh. That is, the land of Gwynllyw.
Hope that helps.
Paul Morgan,
Caerdydd (Cardiff).
Gold Tops, St Woolos, Newport, Monmouthshire.
Gold Tops is still an address in Newport , and coincidentally is the address
of the Register Office. St Woolos Cathedral in Newport was then a parish in
its own right. Monmouth refers to the County (more correctly with
the -shire).
Good luck
