Is Bowrington in your part of Wales? Does the Glynn Iron Co. still exist? A
member of my family tree, William Anthony, received a watch from the Glynn
Iron Co. in 1846. Any help in finding information or where to start is greatly
appreciated.

them taught me. Not sure this helps, it's just it triggered some old
memories.

For Seimon,
The Abergavenny Branch of Gwent FHS have quite a lot of information
about the parish of Llanelly - it being one of those county border
parishes that get moved, if you see what I mean. Perhaps someone in the
Branch could assist you.
The address of the Branch Secretary is
136, Croesonen Parc,
Abergavenny

Hope this helps

Searching for a HOPKINS family who lived in the Blaina or Blaenavon area
about 1900. George, Will and Emma HOPKINS were the siblings of my great
grandmother Mary Jane BOND. George and Will, lived in th Blaina/Abersychan
area. Emma lived on High Street, Blaenavon. When my great grandfather
James BOND died, Mary Jane remarried a Mr. Pitman. I think descendants of
these people still live in the area, but I have lost all contact with this
side of my mother's family. I would really appreciate any assistance.
Thanks!

Seimon, Have you looked at Bradney's "A History of Monmouthshire",
specifically Part 2, The Hundred of Abergavenny? It gives the arms and
pedigree of the Walbeoffe family of Llanhamlech and Llanvapley.
Regards,
Sian.
Hi Seimon,
I noticed the unusual name Walbeoff. It may not be relevant but one of the
witnesses at my grandparent's marriage was Lena Walbyoff . The spelling is
slightly different . The marriage took place in the Holy Trinity Church,
Nantyglo on the 17th September, 1921. My grandparents were Emlyn Cooper and
Hilda Morgan. According to my father, the Coopers and the Walbyoffs were
close friends but I know of no other connection between the two families. If
you find any links I would be very interested to hear.

I only started researching my family ancestry about 6 months ago and have
found it to be both fascinating and frustrating. I have made several visits
to the Family Records Centre in London and have accumulated a fair quantity
of certificates which have answered many questions and posed many new ones.
My maternal grandmother was Mary Rebecca Cousins, born 1 Aug 1889 in
Llanhilleth
She was one of 6 children of William Cousins (b. 1855, Brynmawr) and Mary
Walbeoff (b. 1852 , Llanelly BRE). They lived in Nantyglo in the early
1880s.
My knowledge of the Cousins line ends here. The Walbeoff line I am informed
goes back to the Norman conquest of Brecon. I have some sketchy information
back to the 1750s in Llanelly, Breconshire.
In Summary I am researching the following :
COUSINS - Nantyglo, Llanhilleth
WALBEOFF - Llanelly(BRE), Clydach, Brynmawr, Nantyglo
PARRY (Ann) - Llanelly (b. c1750)
BOWEN (Mary) - Llanelly (b.1794)
HUGHES (Rebecca) - Brynmawr (married Lewis Walbeoff 1842, Llanelly)
I would welcome any information about the above families
Many Thanks

Thanks to Anne Scales for that interesting explanation. I had wondered why my
g/g/grandmother's wedding certificate was marked with an X by her name when at
a later time she was literate enough to write letters. She was married (at
age 19) in 1856 at Siloa Chapel in Aberdare. I sort of thought maybe she had
learned to write in her adulthood, but this now casts a different light on
things.

Just a quickie Walton, to warn you.
The fact that the couple used crosses does NOT NECESSARILY mean either
or both could not write his or her name. It COULD mean that, but it
needn't. Sometimes the space was already prepared, by the Minister or
Registrar, for the couple to put a cross - perhaps on the basis that
that would be less embarrassing than asking them whether
they could sign? And either party (the bride in particular?) might
well be able to sign, yet choose to make a cross rather than 'show up'
an illiterate spouse.
Well, it's good to know for sure that you'd been wondering about the
wrong family - even though it would have made life easier if they'd
been the RIGHT ones!
I suppose now there's a distinct possibility Patrick's father John
never came to Wales at all . . . .
And I Civil Registration of Births in Ireland didn't begin until
1864.
On that cheery note I'd better stop, and go!
Civil Registration in Wales & England began in July 1837.
Was it perhaps just the WRONG Patrick who was born in Ireland - or do
you definitely know YOURS was?
Well, good luck, either way.

Hello from NZ
I have just joined this list after finally getting around to researching my
Granny's family.
Granny was born Ellen Mary COBURN in 1892 in Ashby-de-la-Zouch,
Leicestershire in 1892.
Her parents were James COBURN (b. Monmouth 1866) and Annie STEPHENS (b.
Lydney, ENG 1864).
James' Parents were Thomas COBURN and Ellen DAVIES (DAVIS) married in
Monmouth 1865.
Annies' parents were Walter STEPHENS and Mary COBURN married in Gloucester
1863.
Thomas's parents were William COBURN and Maria WRIGHT
William's parents were Richard COBURN and Elizabeth ?
Mary (who married Walter) was William's sister.
We believe the COBURN's may have been COCKBURN at some stage and may have
come down to Monmouth from Scotland but so far that is only heresay.
I would love to hear from anyone who may have anything to add on this
family.

Pam Thornbury helped me with this one,
and I,m unable to go to the LDS anymore.
Please I need someone to do a lookup for me. I would like to know if my
GGgrandfather & wife passed on or moved.
The last time Pam found them for me was in the 1881 census
GLA.(information below)
5338 28 2, Briton Ferry, Courtsart Cottage, Courtsart Farm ( Cwrtsart
- Welsh spelling)
Wilmott William HD M 64 Farm Bailiff SOM. Weston, super mare.
Elizabeth WI M 63 Wife SOM Tickenham.
This shows William as being born in 1817
other census in MON. shows him born 1815.
So far I havent found a marriage Certificate of them, but would like to
know
if they pass on or what.
As him being a farm bailliff all these years
they started a family in Monmouthshire in
1838 to 1861 in Malpas Monmouthshire, and I think they moved around alot
to take care of the farms for the landlords he worked for.
Sometime the landlords provided a home
for them to live in and sometimes not.
He was a farmbaliff ( in all census) all his
life.
Anyone that can help, I would be very greatful.
Thank you and may God bless.

I'm interested in your Watkins line. I know it's a very common name, but do
you have any info regarding a Rebecca Leek whose first husband was a Mr.
Watkins (don't know his first name). They had a daughter Rachel Watkins born
18 Jan 1840 in Llanwenarth Ultra After his death she married Thomas Nichols,
and they had a daughter Sarah Ann Nichols born 15 July 1858. Rebecca and
Thomas were my Great Great Grandparents. Any info appreciated.

My great grandfather Patrick SULLIVAN was born circa 1843 in Ireland. He
moved with his parents and sibling to Wales where they settled before
immigrating to the Northeast Pennsylvania area. According to the 1861 Census
of Monmouthsire in the parish of Bedwelty and the hamlet of Manmoel a SULLIVAN
family with the elder Patrick SULLIVAN (51), wife Catherine (50), Jeremia (18)
Patrick (17) , John (14) and Mary Ann (10) SULLIVAN lived at Number 4 Row 48
Manmoel, Sirhowy, Bedwelty, Monmouthsire, Manmoel . The younger Patrick
SULLIVAN (my great grandfather) met a married Ellen CUMMINGS. The CUMMINS
family John CUMMINGS and his wife Ellen O'BRIEN were born in Ireland. Their
children Michael, Richard, Andrew and Ellen CUMMINS (my great grandmother)
lived at 13 Furnace Row Rhymney in the Parish of Bedwelty, Wales. From
naturalization papers I have been able to find that the younger Patrick left
Liverpool, England aboard the SS Mancester and arrived at the Port of New York
7 September 1865. I have been able to trace some of the SULLIVAN family once
they arrived in Pennsylvania. They settled in Old Forge, Minooka, Taylor and
Scranton and the surrounding areas. A good part of the family settled in the
early 1900s in Taylor, PA. Patrick SULLIVAN and Ellen CUMMINGS had 15
children.; When Ellen CUMMINGS SULLIVAN died at the age of 80 in 1927she was
survived by 50 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. She was known as
"The grandmother of Taylor" Some of the associated families include but are
definitely not limited to, GERRITY, STANTON, WEISS, SHIELDS, LAFFEY, COSTELLO,
GRIFFIN, FELTON, SALERNO, UNGER, GABRIEL, STAFFORD, BLACK, DAVIS, LYNCH,
CROWE, LAYDEN, LABER, GALLAGHER, CUMMINGS, SHEA, DESKIN, JENNINGS, TOMASETTI
and many many more. Of the children who survived most were female-Ellen,
Margaret, Nora (Honora), Mary, Loretta, Catherine, Cecilia, Elizabeth and
Bridget; males-John, Andrew, Joseph and Edward born between 1865-1895. Some
of the family settled in Redham, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and other points
unknown to me at this time. As you can imagine I am looking for any
information regarding my ancestors and their descendants. While I am not
sure, there are stories that this SULLIVAN line originated in County CORK but
I do not have any proof of that. Looking forward to a positive response from
fellow researchers. Thanking you all in advance for reading this rather long
and detailed tale. Sincerely, Walton J. Sullivan at wsullivw(a)aol.com
I
I thought I had found my Patrick SULLIVAN my great great grandfather and his
family but unfortunately it looks like I missed the boat. I had reported that
some very helpful researchers in South Wales had identified a SULLIVAN family
in the 1861 Census for Monmouthshire in the parish of Bedwelty and the hamlet
of Manmoel . which consisted of Patrick SULLIVAN 51, (thought this was my
great great grandfather) Head of household, married, Occupation Coker, Place
of birth Ireland and his wife Catherine, 50; children Jeremia 18, Patrick 17,
(I thought this was my great grandfather) John 14 and Mary Ann 10. The
address given on the census returns as number 4, Row 48, Manmoel, Sirhwoy,
Bedwelty, Monmouthshire. Manmoel is less than 10 miles from Rhymney at the
address 13 Furnace Row Rhymney on the 1861 census is the Cummins family. John
and Ellen Cummin(g)s born in Ireland and their Children Michael, Richard,
Andrew and Ellen being born in the parish of Bedwelty. Unfortunately it looks
like this is not my SULLIVAN family.
I have received a Marriage certificate which indicates my Patrick Sullivan
was 21; a bachelor; a fireman in the iron works married Ellen Cummins; 19; a
spinster. They were living in Rhymney. Patrick's father was John Sullivan
(deceased); a general laborer. Ellen Cummins was living in Rhymney; her
father was John Cummins; a general laborer. They were married 25 July 1863.
Marriage was solemnized at the Register Office Bedwelty, Monmouth Wales.
Witness was David Evans and Mary By***. Neither Patrick or Ellen were able to
write their name and they both signed their X mark. My Patrick immigrated 7
September 1865 and settled in PA in the Old Forge, Minooka, Taylor and
Scranton area.
So very close but it does not look like a have a solid connection. I hope the
information provided herein helps some other researcher with their search.
Back to the drawing board I go now to find out what I can about John SULLIVAN,
deceased, my great great grandfather and his family.
As u can see, the first part of my message I thought I had identified my great
great grandparents. The second message points out my disappointment.
regards,
Walton J. Sullivan at wsullivw(a)aol.com
