Hello Ann:
Any luck with that scanner yet? I seem to recall when I installed my
scanner that a com port setting needed to be adjusted in the computer set
up. Quite a miserable and frustrating time it was but the scanner is well
worth it.
Thank you for your offer to check the Merlin. I am interested in entries
concerning the "Watkins" family of the Blaenavon area (Llanover upper and
Varteg/Garndiffath) and any extracts during 1830-1833 would be of interest.
I am not sure of all the details surrounding the Merlin regarding
publication dates and size of this newspaper. If you are up to the task of
checking the Merlin I would greatly appreciate it. Articles in the "Merlin"
pertaining the the Varteg area would also be of interest. Maybe once that
scanner of yours is up and running you could just scan an article and e-mail
it to me.
Too bad I'm over in the states or you would have another helping hand in the
transcription of county records. I had met up with Richard Roynon on my
last visit to Wales in November and am amazed at his dedication. If there
is anything I can do over the computer let me know.
Hope you and your family have a "Merry Christmas" and a very safe and
prosperous "New Year 2000".
Regards
Georgia

Hi Bruce,
Sorry, can't help you with an email address, but I can tell you that there are
some pictures of the school and pupils (who are unfortunately not named) in the
early part of this century in a book called :
OLD BLACKWOOD AND LOWER SIRHOWY VALLY in photographs
By Brian Collins and Terry Powell
Published by STEWERT WILLIAMS, Publishers, Barry
It includes a wonderful one of the headmaster Mr T N Phillips sitting at his
desk in 1910.
Hope this helps,
Cheers,

Can any one tell me what work the following jobs were?
stonedresser
hammerman
forgeman
tin plate man
catching tin,
plate layer.
I noticed that in 1881, there were a number of women working in the
factories too. Any one know of working conditions for both sexes? I
should know, I was told sometime in my past,by my parents who came from
the valley!!

Hi Everyone,

Hi Georgia,
As Editor of the Journal I now have copies of every edition but back
issues are very scarce. As soon as I get the stupid computer to see the
stupid scanner I will be able to scan the pages but at the moment the
computer is completely blind when I ask it to look for the scanner and
it sits on the desk and sulks at me when I try.
I will look through them if you give me a name and a date but the
extracts only go as from 1830 to 1833 - so far. I'll do my best

I have two great uncles who left their jobs as miners in Blaina, Mon to work in the gold mines in South Africa.
They were Thomas John and James HOSKINS. James was born in Blaina in the last quarter 1879 and his brother two years before in the last quarter 1877. They probably left Wales in the early years of this century.
They lived at 28 Queen Street, Blaina , being the sons of Thomas and Sarah HOSKINS. Thomas was born in 1847 and Sarah, formerly Jones, born in 1850. They married on 3.10.1870. Thomas died on 9.12.1925 and Sarah in Dec.1899.
Has anyone any links with this family?
Linda
Hello Ann:
Thanks for the info regarding the Merlin.
Does a record of the extracts taken from the Merlin exist? You mentioned
the Gwent FHS publishing them in their journals. Are those back issues of
the journals still available?

Georgia
