Hello Georgia,
There don't seem to be many patronymics in the Blaenavon/Llanfoist &
Llanover
areas back to 1760s at least. This seems to be a common feature of the S
Wales industrial areas. In West Wales agricultural communities, the use of
patronymics extends into the 1800s.
Getting stuck with Welsh Genealogy around 1800 is, unfortunately, a problem
I am afflicted with! I expect others will have similar tales of woe.
Does anyone know of ways past the 1800 barrier....?
Happy hunting

This is my first posting to this list. Would someone be kind enough
to check the 1871 census for Tredegar for my gg grandparents, George
and Caroline Sims and their family. I have birth certificates for
Thomas (1866), Franklin George (1869) and Edgar (1872) all born North
Lane, Tredegar so they were probably at that address in 1871.
I am hoping to find the names of any other children.
Many thanks,
Valerie Best, duey(a)uq.net.au
Don't try the patronymics. Keep looking for your surname. if you don't, you
are going to get hopelessly lost. I still have a surname back to 1770 on one
family and 1750 on another. Neither one was extremely wealthly. One was a
shepherd and the other a yeoman. The reason you can't find your person is
that either you are not looking in the right place, he or she is not there, or
you just haven't found them yet.

Hi Dot
I wonder if I could possibly ask for an 1861 check for HALE in MON please?
Specifically any Henry, Charles or Theodore HALE refs; also CANTLE or
DELAN[E]Y. [I imagine that there will be few of the latter.]
Many thanks.

There is a village called Cwm which is between Abercarn and Ebbw Vale on
the A4046. Itt is quite a small place. I can't remember which district it
is in for the census but I will ask the oracle as soon as possible.

Hi,
Emma Edwards m. Evan GRAVEL, son of Thomas & Elizabeth GRAVEL (siblings, per
the 1851 census, were Job(?), Sarah and John GRAVEL).
Emma's sister, Margaret EDWARDS m. James AURELIUS on 20 October 1845.
James AURELIUS's sister, Margaret, married Benjamin GRAVEL circa 1846. (The
1841 Blaina census lists Benjamin, 15, living with a Joseph, 20, a ?June?,
20, and a ?June? GRAVEL, 60.)
We know how Margaret & Emma connect, but any ideas how (and if) Evan &
Benjamin relate?
By the way, my husband descends from Margaret EDWARDS m James AURELIUS.
We've got the 1881 census at our FHC, but haven't had any luck finding anyone!

Would you please check Pontypool for a John Rogers, wife unknown? They had
a son William Rogers born 1846. This is the only child's name I have. He
was married to Mary Ann Hale/Hill 1871 in Pontypool.
Also have William James Carne bor 1841 married Harriet Wilson. I don't if
he would have been married by 1861.
Thanks,
Shirley

Hello Deborah
What a terribly sad story! The poor little girl!! I'm not sure about UK
registration requirements, but here in NZ, after 1 March 1913 it became
compulsory to register stillborn births but a death certificate was not
required. I wonder if it may have been the same in the UK? I should
think that there would be a record of her death, at least.
Best wishes with finding her.

Hello all.
I have recently discovered that I had a cousin, born at home in Tredegar
c.1933, who had spina bifida. Because of this, she was 'put to one side'
and given no medical assistance. As a result she died within a few hours.
I feel that she deserves inclusion in our family tree, but I'm not sure how
to find out about her. Her parents are dead and her only sibling (born
almost 20 years after her!), doesn't know any more than I do.
It is quite possible she was not named as such, but I wondered if I should
look for a birth, a death or both.
Am I being very cynical in wondering if she may have been recorded as a
still-birth by the G.P. in attendance, in order to cover his back so to
speak. Would he have 'got away' with that in the '30's'? If this is the
case, does that mean she won't appear on any records?
Any advice or comments would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Deborah. delf.williams(a)btinternet.com

I received a download on 25 June re-Evan Gravel & the 1851 census for
Aberystruth, he being 16 at that census. You offered to send me a
transcript. Pleeeease do.
I didn't feel I could ask before, as I had not done any leg work of my own
in my nearest(Chelt.)L.D.S family history centre. Today I had my first crack
at the 1881 census.
In the Gravel - only one 'L' - line I located Gravel Evan, age 47 at Clock
Row Blaina, his 7 children & his 44yr old wife EDWARDS Emma from Ebbw Vale.
Next week I try the 1891 & 1871 census for links - from what I was
instructed by a very kind researcher, a seemingly more difficult access
task. I should be able to locate several of the family lines in time &
place, including Emma Edwards. Thanks for all the 'helping typing fingers'
of the internet who help slow starters like me.
