Hello,
My ancestors lived in Nantyglo and Brynmawr many years ago and I am
interested
in learning more about the area. I have been researching our family history
for the last two years and discovered many things. According to a census
document I obtained, my great great grandmother was born in Nantyglo at a
place called "Pen y waun". I have a map which shows such a place indicated
on
the road/track which traverses the ridge between Nanyglo and Newtown/Ebbw
Vale. I wonder if anyone knows of this place and what it is/was c. 1830's?
I
would be grateful for any help.
When I was in Wales two years ago I didn't even know where they had lived
then
or I would have definitely gone to Brynmawr, and walked down Bailey Street
where they lived in the 1860's. I'm sure it was a different place then, with
the iron and coal industry in its heyday. I live in the US and far removed
from Wales, but I have a great desire to return some day.

Larry, why don't you list your family names in case someone else comes across
them? You said they lived in Brynmawr in the 1860's. What census year did you
find them in Nantyglo?
There is a book just re-released by Alexander Cordell, "Rape of the Fair
Country" which is about this area and mentions Nantyglo specifically. It is a
novel but the place names are real. It goes into the Chartists uprising and
what it was like living in a mining town.

Always looking for Edward/Edwin Boyle! Born 1818-20; married Mary
Elizabeth
Jones (she was born 4-24-1831) (her parents were John Jones and Mary LLoyd).
He was a stone mason and general contractor. The only other information is
on
their son, myt GGF, John Edward Boyle, born 8-9-1861 in Nant y glo or Bryn
Mawr. The family came to Pennsylvania circa 1871-2. I have most of the
records from that point forward and am willing to share.
Any help on a marriage record or perhaps 1851 or 61 census? Any other ideas?
TIA,
Bonnie

Hi, Bonnie, I'll check the 1861 census for you in a couple of days, it's at
our local LDS library. I'll get back to you.
An added note, when you send a message to the list, you don't have to put
request-L, you only use that when you want to subscribe or unsubscribe.

Hi, I'm Dot Rutherford. I don't claim to be an expert on this area, far from
it, but I just returned from a 2 weeks trip to Wales and went to Nantyglo
where my Grandmother Rebecca Davies and my Great Grandparents, Sarah Ann
Nichols Davies and Thomas Davies were born. The three of them came to the U.
S. when Rebecca was 6 months old, and I've always wanted to visit Wales.
I have the 1861 census and index for this area, if anyone needs a lookup.
Maybe some of you can start listing your interests in this area.
