I wonder if some kind soul could possibly do a lookup for me in the 1841
census. Interested in the information on Benjamin and Sarah BUTCHER of
Trevethin, possibly Garndiffaith. Thank you in advance for any help.

Hi Everyone,
When my grandfather WILLIAM HALE enlisted in the Royal Artillery at Newport in
1873 he gave as his occupation PUDDLER. He was about 20 years of age. I haven't
been able to find him or the rest of the family on the 1861 or 1871 censuses
anywhere so I wondered if anyone could tell me the most likely place to look?
Where were the most important Ironworks in Monmouthshire at the time? I know
there was a big one at Blaenavon but I suspect that there were plenty around
the Ebbw Vale/Tredegar area. Does anyone have a list with their locations? Or
is there a book I could get hold of which would tell me?
Any information gratefully received.
Thanks,
Glyn Hale

The Hanbury family have most of their family papers in the Gwent Record
Office - at least a fair number of them It might be worth contacting
them for more information about lord and lady Llanover - I presume the
information is required about the Lady Llanover who invented the Welsh
National Costume.
I was going to put the email address of the REcord office on here but
after tearing the room apart I can't find it!!!! I'll try again

Hello All,
I have received an email enquiry about Lord and Lady Llanover of
Monmouthshire. Does anyone know whether Llanover Court is still standing?
I have a newish Ordnance Survey Map of the Blaenavon/Llanover area - this
shows a 'court' some 2 miles to the North of Llanover, near a place called
Llanellen.
I would appreciate any information about Lord and Lady Llanover and the
Court.
Thankyou

Hi Blanche,
Although the George COTTLE I am interested in was born in BATH I think
it unlikely that he was connected with the Bishop of Bath and Wells as
he was a humble plasterer and house painter. (But you never know!)
In 1841 the family was living in ABERSYCHAN, Mon; in 1851 WRINGTON in
Somerset and in 1861 in HORFIELD, Gloucestershire. That's when I lose
track of them. It's quite possible that some of them emigrated to NZ.
There is a definite connection between these Cottles and my HALE
ancestors who also lived in ABERSYCHAN, WRINGTON and HORFIELD so I'd be
very interested in hearing about your friend's COTTLE / HALE marriages
in New Zealand.
Cheers,
Glyn

Hi,
Don't mean to "but in" but is the Old Blaina Chapel the same as the
Berea Independent one in Blaina?
Doing HOSIER & Sanders surnames. James HOsier married there 1859.

Hi Karen,
Sorry can't answer that one, because I don't know, all I know is that which
is written on the certificate in my possession.

Hi Tony,
I'm afraid you may NOT have got lucky here! In the 1881 Mon census @
Aberystruth:
WATKINS Elvira, 23, Serv, U, Domestic Servant, BRE Brynmawr
Living with Elizabeth MEREDITH, Huckster, GLS==
If you have an age for George I might be able to pick him and family out
from all the other George WATKIN/s.

G'day all,
Is there SKS who is willing to look up GEORGE WATKINS and his family in the
Aberystruth district in the 1881 census.
I am trying to trace my GGmother's family, the census was taken one month
prior to her wedding day so I am hoping that she was living at home at the
time of the head count.
She is named as Elvirah Ann Watkins on her Wedding Certificate, but I would
dearly love to know her mother's name and any siblings there may have been.
She was married at the Old Blaina Chapel in May of 1881.
TIA
Tony.
Hi Glyn,
How far have you progressed with your COTTLE family? I may have mentioned
to you that a good friend of ours - of the same name - is descended from a
family from the Bristol / Bath area. [She professes a connection to a
former 'Bishop of Bath' [and Wells?] but I'm not certain of the veracity.
Could this be likely?]
After her forebears arrived in NZ there were a couple of COTTLE / HALE
marriages. [I may have shown you the details - can't remember.]
Interested?
Best wishes,
Blanche

Hi Folks: Could someone please give me some help?
My grandmother was ANNE ELIZABETH MORGAN born 1865 to HENRY MORGAN and
PRUDENCE JONES. My dad told me when I was a young lad that she was born
under the Crumlin bridge.
I recently received a certified copy of entry of birth. Her date of
birth was Feb 13,1865 and the place was listed as The
Sovereith,Llanhilleth. The occupation of Henry, her father ,was listed
as Labourer at Works.
Can anyone tell me if this data is consistent with being born "under the
Crumlin bridge?"
Just in case there are any relatives out there she had a sister
Florence, who I believe moved to Penarth and a brother Joe. There were
other siblings. Best regards, Gordon
My great grandmother was Mary Harriet LLOYD born in about 1865 in
Abercarne. She may have had a sister named Lelif (?) born about 1880 also
in Abercarne. She married my great grandfather Arthur POWELL (born about
1867, Bryn Mawr) and they lived in Bryn Mawr with Arthur's mother Henrietta
POWELL (maiden name WICKS - born 1829, Nailsworth GLS). After Arthur died,
Mary married his brother George POWELL who had previously been widowed
(first wife Annie ---- born 1857, Bryn Mawr).
If any of this rings any bells I would love to hear from you. In particular
I would like to find out more about the LLOYDS. Thanks
Happy hunting!

I don't think the confusion occurs in "which county", but in "which
parish". My understanding is that Ebbw Vale is in Bedwellty Parish which
is part MON and part GLA.
