1691 Hearth Tax List for Kyle, Ayrshire
In 2007, during a visit to Ayrshire I found this book which listed most of the Parish, but
the records for some Parishes had been destroyed and they could not be included in this
publication The Hearth Tax for Ayrshire 1691, Ayrshire Records Series Volume 1, ed Robert
Urquhart & Rob Close, 1998.
I am not sure if this book is available outside of Ayrshire or Scotland? Nor am I aware
if it may now be available online through the Ayrshire Archives or some other Ayrshire
body.
Ayrshire is divided into three divisions - Carrick, Kyle and Cunningham - and the author
has set out the collection of these records on that basis.
[The number after the names is the number of Hearths for each household]

Again, as like Carrick, many Parishes had no Boyds listed. I have listed all the Parishes
that had records available.
It is interesting that in the Parish of Galston & Riccarton, under Galstoun Wassalls
hearth, there is an Isobell Boyd in Lisnock with four hearths. This, is the only time
that I have seen the name “Lisnock” and with four hearths, it would indicate she had some
wealth. However, it does not tell us if she is an widow or an heiress daughter. And
there appears to be no Boyd living in Riccarton, which is only a mile, or two, across the
river from Kilmarnock.
Has anyone come across any Boyd family in Lisnock, Galston or found any other reference to
them? Nor do I seem to have found any Boyd families that came from Ayr (town) either. It
has five Boyd families that are located in different parts of this town, but after four
decades of searching for Boyd families, I can’t recall any coming from this location
either.
Thank you for your assistance.
