Thanks for the concern Margaret, but fortunately it wasn't exactly San
Francisco. The strength was 5.2 on the Richter scale, and the latest
reports have some chimney and roof damage and the like near the
epicentre in Lincolnshire. There is one report of a man suffering
severe injuries when a chimney came through his roof. Having said that,
it was the strongest tremor in this country since 1984, and was felt
over a wide area. We're about 100 miles from the centre, and our house
shook. I was reading late (it was at about 1am local time), and it at
first sounded like someone walking very heavily up the passageway to my
room. Then it became more like a herd of elephants!
Again thanks for the concern: fortunately it seems to have been minor in
terms of damage to property, and specially people.

Did anyone on the list experience any damage or injuries in the
earthquake that shook much of Britain today? How about the various
archives? I hope everyone is safe!
The news report I just read quotes Julian Bukits of the British
Geological Survey : "This one has been felt throughout the whole of
England and southern Scotland."
