Does anyone know of publications for the Sorn area that might have reported
on those who died at an advanced age sometime after 1841?
In the 1841 census for Sorn, I have found:
ED 7, In Stepends
James Ramage, 100, Ag Lab, N [not born in Ayrshire]
James Ramage, 60, Coal Miner, Y
Mary Ramage, 40, Y
Since Janet RAMAGE gave her birthplace as Sorn in the 1851 census for
Craigie, I am trying to determine whether this James Ramage, age 100, could
be her father.
Janet Ramage, married to John CLARK in 1826, Craigie, was born between 1789
& 1795, according to ages recorded for her. In 1841 she was said to be 46;
in 1851, 58; at death in 1857, Hurlford, Riccarton, she was said to be 68.
Her last known child, Thomas, was born in 1832.
My problem is that there was more than one James Ramage in Sorn for the
relevant period, and neither was married to Margaret LOVE, the name given
for Janet Ramage's mother on her death certificate.
One James Ramage was married to Mary HAMILTON; another to Margaret
HENDERSON. Neither of these families had a son named James that I can find
on the OPR for Sorn, assuming the James, 60, above, is son of the James,
However, James Ramage and Margaret Henderson did have a daughter Janet born
at Stepends of Gillmillscroft 1788 July 20. I suppose the mother's maiden
name of LOVE on the death certificate for Janet Ramage could be in error,
but that is not enough.
A Lilly Rammage married to a Hugh ANDERSON had seven children between 1770
and 1779 in Sorn. The OPR shows a possible marriage for this couple Dec
1769 in Wiston & Roberton, Lanark.
Anyone see anything familiar?
