people born in Auchinleck baptised at Kilmarnock?
Researching FERGUSON, THOMSON, RIGGENS & HAMILTON in Ayrshire.
I did once find an ancestor in the OPR recorded as born in one parish
but baptised in another; I think this was perhaps to do with the family
being Congregationalists but I haven't explored it yet. This is the full
entry, from 1853 :
"RAE Agness Gunion, daughter of William Rae and Mary Gunion spouses was
born in Torthorwald parish and baptised in Caerlaverock by the Rev'd
Thomas Pullen, Congregational Min'r Dumfries, who verified the above."
I've never seen another OPR birth - and I've looked up dozens of mine -
where the baptism took place in another parish and I'm under the
impression it was not common practice.
What you need to do is check the full OPR entry in Kilmarnock. Also, you
need to check other census entries for William to see if his birthplace
is consistently given as Auchinleck. Also again, what about OPR for
Auchinleck? There could be a mis-spelling. (This is all assuming that he
is even recorded in the OPR at all!)
It's tempting to accept a record which looks as if it might fit but I
know from past experience that it's best not to - you can end up doing
more research on that line, then having to abandon it.
Sorry if I sound negative, but both names are quite common anyway (And I
have a personal distrust of the naming pattern, given that I appear to
be descended from many lines of contrary people who paid little
attention to it! They used mainly the same names, but in any old order!)
Hope this helps anyway.
