Happy New Year (and Hogmanay)!
Can anyone help with information about the (former?) locations of
Cookston or Wardneuk in Kilmarnock?
The Kilmarnock OPR 597/4, Frame 966 for my GG-GM Agnes Rankin says:
"Agnes Rankine 9th child of John Rankine Farmer in Cookston and Jean
Galt spouses was born Feb 13th 1805".
The family bible of her son, James Craig, indicates that she was born at
Wardneuk Farm on that date. At least one of her siblings, firstborn
John, was born in Kilmaurs, under 2 miles from Wardneuk. I'll check the
rest of the births on LDS film #1041385 for clues.
I can't find a trace of "Cookston", but on a recent visit to Killie I
discovered on a series of old maps at the Dick Institute that Wardneuk
was on the west side of the Glasgow Road just south of the cunnent
roundabout at Western Road (B7064). Apparently the buildings there are
fairly recent - within the past 4-5 years.
Would appreciate any information about these locations.
Thanks very much!
