I do not know if the following is relevant. ie the 1881 census entry for
Aikenhead farm. There is a John GEMMILL there, whether it is the same one in the
photo I cannot say.
The bit you have on Bob Allen in message viz "is Bob Allen still living", I
cannot quiet fathom. Do mean Bob Allen is still living "now" or back when the
photo was taken.
I do have an interest in Aikenhead, A line of TANNAHILLs were they until least
the end of the 18th century.

Hello List, I have just been given an old photo and was hoping
able to work out when it was taken. On the back is inscribed Taken at
Aikenhead holme by Mr. H. Taylor the man at the head of the Horse is John
Gemmill of Aikenhead and the man on the machine (the machine is a horsedrawn
plough) is Bob Allen still living in John Kirklands house a son-in-lawof
Kirkland. That was written in pencil then someone has added in ink the
following. The Allen's were an old family in Low Fenwick Kept a public house
and where carriers? The house was the Carriers?? Arms. On the sign board was
Mrs Allen giving a glass of whisky out of a bottle to a Teamster with his
team. Anyone own Bob Allen son-in Law of Kirkland? or his friend John
Gemmill Regards Betty Raffaele Cooma Australia.
