Unfortunately I don't have any Cockburn's in my genealogy. The person whose
posting I originally responded to had Cockburn,s and Meikle's. I am only
interested in the Meikle's. You can search rootsweb for you name and find
this person. Sorry I am of no more help that this
I have a line of Cockburns, unproven, but supposedly, Janet Cockburn, daughter
of John Cockburn, the Laird of Ormiston; granddaughter of Adam Cockburn,
married Thomas Wight at High Kilburn, England around 1559.
About 1572 Thomas died (was killed)? and after his death Janet went back to
Ormiston, Scotland to live near her father. Her son, John Wight, descendants
would be my connection, if any, with the Cockburns.
"Adam Cockburn was succeeded by his son John Cockburn DMP (member of
parliament) for Fadaingtonshire in the last Scottish Parliament and who sat in
the British Parliament for that County till 174l, and was Lord of Admiralty
and probably firm supporter, of the Walpole Administration.
The Ormiston Wights"
As I said, I do not have any proof, this is all just so and so says. Maybe
someday I will have the time and good fortune to either prove or disprove this
line of descent.Any connection with the Cockburns you are interested

Tobermory is a small and beautiful fishing village on the island of Mull in
the county of Argyll, parish of Kilninian & Kilmore.
It existed as a hamlet based on a very sheltered natural harbour for
centuries, but was rebuilt and greatly expanded as a planned village by the
Scottish Fisheries Commission about 110 years ago.
The Treasure Ship of the Spanish Armada took shelter there from the gales
which dispersed their attempt to invade England. It blew up in mysterious
circumstances and divers have been trying to recover its treasures ever
since - without success.
Knowing the locals well, I'd imagine their ancestors emptied the ship before
ever allowing it to be blown up.
It is near the original Calgary

I am looking for information on descendants of this couple:
James McSkimming Cowan (1798-1878), Elizabeth Campbell (1796-?)
married 1827, Dalrymple Scotland.
lived Monkton/Prestwick, where most of children are buried (Elizabeth, Janet, Margaret, Isabella, Samuel, William, Anne, James, all born between 1827 to 1840.
The only info I have on descendants is that Samuel married Jane Reid of Lanarkshire in 1863 and they lived in Perth after their marriage where Samuel was a newspaper publisher. Children, born in Perth, include Ella (Elizabeth Campbell Cowan) who married Archibald Kennedy (of Banffshire) in 1890 in perth, and Violet.
I would be interested in anyone who might have info related to this family.
Alexander RUSSELL (b. Muirkirk 1840) = Marion GIBB (b. Stonehouse 1842) m.
at Stonehouse 1863
The parents of Marion GIBB were Archibald GIBB and Ann NEILSON.
I have not yet followed the GIBB and NEILSON lines, but I have Alexander
RUSSELL's line back to Robert RUSSELL (b. Sanquhar c. 1773) = Jean McGHEE
(b. Crawfordjohn c. 1783) m. at Muirkirk 1802.
The parents of Jean McGHEE were James McGHEE and Annabella WILSON. She had
a brother James MCGHEE (b. Muirkirk 1797)
February 24, 1899 "Ardrossan & Saltcoats Herald"
Mr John Douglas, slater, Saltcoats, who has had some considerable experience
as a choirmaster, has been appointed choirmaster in Saltcoats Free Church.
At a marriage presentation from Ardrossan Parish Council to Mr Ritchie,
inspector of Poor, Mr Alex Hamilton presided and among the speakers were
Bailie Harvey, Baillie Miller, Mr Morris, Mr Gilroy, Captain Torrance, Mr
Hugh Currie and Mr JB Aitken.
Mr Walter Dymock has been elected captain of West Kilbride Cycle Club and Mr
Robert Craig vice-captain.
The REV Archibald Hunter, assistant Kilpatrick parish, has been elected
minister of Cambuslang. He is a native of Lamlash.
Mr James Patterson was elected captain of Kilwinning and Eglinton Cycling
Club and Mr Robert Craig vice-captain.
Mr Craig like me seems to like his bike! Wonder if he was the ancestor of
Daniel Craig the pig farmer turned minx farmer at Ardrossan in the 1950s?
