I am researching my family in Tasmania and was hoping that someone might have information
on the following:
Showgrounds Sorell (I heard there wasn't one) is it called something else?
The Bushy Park Showgrounds was the Clover Lea Estate (or Clover Leaf), not Kentdale
Estate. It was owned by Vincent Shoobridge (correct spelling).
Tasmanian Sanitorium (not that now, but was quite prevalent at one time in the
Anything you can offer would be wonderful
Thank you and regards
Glenora is on the banks of the Derwent River north of New Norfolk - there is
still a school there.
Sorell is a town to the east of Hobart, near Pittwater - I don't think they
ever had a showground - not a big enough town to support a show - don't
understand what you mean by "was it called something else"?
The Bushy Park Showgrounds certainly do exist - the show is in January each
year I think - probably owned by the Show Society or the local Council - may
have originally been part of the mentioned estates - land owners sometimes
donated land for community purposes (much more generous than these days)
I think the Tasmanian Sanatorium was the hospital in Macquarie Street
Hobart, next to Gore Street. It was used mainly for tuberculosis patients.
It was later the Vaucluse Hospital and a few years ago converted to
residential units. A search on hospitals in the library might turn up
something, or on one of the heritage web-sites.
