I'm attempting to update our website with the factual stories of the lives
of Mary Cockerill and Thomas Worrall, before the ABC program on Michael Howe
goes to air tomorrow night. As you may or may not know, I have a particular
interest in this part of Tas. history, because I believe Mary Cockerill,
Michael Howe's companion, was in some ways attached to my ancestors'
household (the Cockerells, in New Town,) before she became Howe's
I know already, after viewing the relevant Facebook page, that much of what
will be shown tomorrow is a nonsense, through no real fault of those
associated with the program, as they, like every author after 1827, took
their material from "The Military Sketchbook" and what is purported to be
the writings of Thomas Worrall, the convict who was partly responsible for
Howe's death, rather than the writings of H. E. Wells, who wrote the book
"Michael Howe - The Last and Worst of the Bushrangers" in 1818.
I've been trying to locate "stock-keeper Warburton", who seems to come to
life in VDL in "The Military Sketchbook" of 1827, just like Mary
pregnancy occurs for the first time in Von Stieglitz's ADB entry of 1966.
Does anyone have a copy or facsimile copy of the 1818 book by Wells? If so,
is Warburton mentioned there? I can't find him anywhere and believe he's
another invention of McGinn, author of The Military Sketchbook: he certainly
didn't receive any reward related to the demise of Howe and his gang.
Please checkout our website for my info. on Worrall et al if you're
interested in the true story of Howe and his gang - I've a pretty
comprehensive collection of material which I'm trying to sort into a
readable format at www.heavenandhelltogether.com
- you can search in the
search box for whoever you're interested in.
I have all the relevant Aus. newspaper articles, the later corrupted by The
Military Sketchbook versions of Well's 1818 work, all the Col. Sec.
material, and The Military Sketchbook itself, available online. I also have
all of the HRA records re. Howe - I DON'T have a copy of the ORIGINAL 1818
Wells book and that's what I'm especially interested in,
Best wishes all,
