Paul and listers,
The real record is the source record.
In other words the official military record. These are available (to buy) or
have digitised (for free) from the NAA.
The WW2 site does not infer that the records on that site are correct.

I've had some correspondence with the relevant Minister on this matter.
She took the view that their data was correct, and if anyone wanted
to change anything, they had to prove that the change should be made.
But she also indicated that the database would be amended to allow
for disputed information to be noted.
But her staff were not so positive or dismissive. They had become
alarmed at the poor data entry and checking done by the consultant,
such things as Sydney having an entry for most states, Canberra being
in NSW (well, it is, sort of!) and Adelaide...well, the list goes on.
A visual scan of any bunch of 100 records will show 5 to 7% of
visible errors - places that don't exist, same person with 2 or 3
birthdays, and so on. But, unlike the AWM who seem to have checked
their data, anything went in this instance.
I can accept that not everyone told the truth, not everything got
proper spelling, and places have changed names/how they are known
since then. But as the only public record of the WWII troops, I feel
it is not very respectful of them.
