I am currently researching the life and times of Daniel Burke of Westbury.
Dan was the Warden of Westbury council for 40+ years and a member of the House
of Assembly (1893-1903). He was also involved in the escape of the Irish exile
John Mitchel in 1853. I intend to publish this in book form in the near future.
I have already published the story of Daniel's early family life (1827 - 1853),
a book which is called "Holycross: the story of the O'Mara family."
This book won the Lillian Watson Family History Award in 2003.
I am also researching families associated with the Burkes.
O'Mara, O'Meara, Griffin, Roper, Atkins.
I am slowly researching my ancestors
*Ann (Campbell ) McLeay* who came to Tas on the Storm Cloud ( Captain
Campbell, is HE a rel?)
as the widow of Farquhar Mcleay 1795-1840 approx
with children Ann who later married Donald Morrison who started the
Bridgenorth School in 1860?
Murdoch who farmed with Ann in the north and was
buried unmarried at Winkleigh
and Colin who went to the Victorian goldfields in
1856 after his sisters marriage.
Ann Campbell McLeays grandaughter Ann Fraser came to live with them
after her parents and sister died in Scotland. She married Roderick
Beaton. One of their children , Colin Murdoch McLeay Beaton was killed
at Ypres inWW1
The McLeays, Frasers and Beatons were buried at Winkleigh but the grave
stones are not there.
Two other brothers of Murdoch, Alex went to America and were last heard
of about 1861.I know nothingabout them, except the family oral history
that one of them died in 1858 and the other one could not read or write.
There seem to be strong family connections to farming and teaching.
Anyone with connecting info ?
