Hi all listers
just a warning on being careful on what to open. I received an email with
the following subject matter.
As I had made a request to the list I felt that this would surely be safe
but because of warnings on the list over the years I was in two minds
whether to open the attachment or not. I went into the archives and checked
to see if there was a lister named don johnston who contributed to the list.
Finding the name I thought it must be safe and opened the
attachment...only to be told it was infected with a virus. It just shows you
can never be too careful!!!!

William was my great-uncle.

My name is Anthea (Anne) Grant nee Law. I live at Portland , Victoria where
I am chair of the Family History Group.
I was born & educated in Hobart and married in Victoria in 1969 and started
my genie journey with Iain's family.. easier than Tasmanian research at the
time. I have several convicts in my ancestry George Law, Ann Day, Patrick
O'Brien (Brien) Ellen Donnelly & Bridget McMahon. I also descend from
Salmon (free c1815) Mary O'Brien (free & unrelated to Patrick), Patrick
Crossin, Charles Smith, Jane Mountain.
Can help with Victorian & local Portland research.
My name is Cheryl and I live in New Zealand and I am seeking any information which would be much appreciated on the names below, and will exchange with what I have found by research. I am seeking the Marriage Dates especially but any extra information would be terrific. All I know is most of my ancestors lived in Fingal area.

Transfer of land ........
It appears in the Hobart Gazette under administration of effects...........
Administration of the Land and goods and C of ****
The document actually summons the members of the family or those receiving
goods or chattells etc.........to shew cause unto this Honourable Court why
administration of all singular the lands goods chattels rights and credits
and effects of the deceased within the Island of Tasmania and the
dependencies thereof of the said deceased intestate as hath been represented
These notices often excluded the wife from inheriting the land and she then
had to show cause why she should receive it ..........
wishing to know more then contact me off list......
I have few of these but have not ever indexed them..........for a few
different years but not the year of 1883-1884

Subject: [AUS-Tas] Transfer of land title
> Hi everyone,
> I wonder if someone would know what records may be accessible in regard to
the transfer of ownership.
> Let me explain.
> We have a lady, who upon the death of her husband, (in Tasmania), is then
recorded as the owner of the land previously recorded as owned by him.(this
is from the assessment roll)
> In 1883, or 1884 the owner of the land is then shown to be the lady's son.
We presume the lady has died but can't find any death record for her, and
have also tried Victoria and South Australia, as children were supposed to
be living there.
> To the best of our knowledge, there isn't a will.
> The son who is now the owner in 1884 isn't the eldest, or even second
eldest son, and so we are curious about why he got the land, and whether his
mother had died, etc.
> Some one did suggest that if there isn't a will there is some other
process which would have been documented for the land to have changed
> Does any one know what it is, and whether there is a way for us to find
out about the particular details.

I'm Jim Lewis. I grew up in Tasmania and moved to Queensland 26 years ago.
I have been researching my family history only seriously for the past five
years but have had more than a passing interest before that. Other
relatives have done some research but I like the discovery aspect of doing
it myself and using the research process as a means of putting the names I
find in their historical context as well as giving a few more hooks to hang
history on. My wife is researching her family as well.
My names list, with dates for Tasmanian BDM events of the "early" people, is:
HANSON Ann - married 1819
ASHTON Ellen - married 1848
COX Anna Maria - born 1837
FISHER William - married 1848 to IKIN
HENTY James - died 1882
IKIN Sarah - born 1826
JOLLIFFE Bertha - emigrated 1888
JONES Robert - born ca 1824
LEWIS Richard - married 1816
MACKELLAR Isabella - married 1816
NEAT (NEALE) married 1828
WILSON Lily - born 1872 (Tas?)
Thanks Meryl for keeping the list running along so well.
