G,day Leslie & Listers
My father's G Granfather Thomas William BURKE is said by family researchers to have
died at Bathurst NSW on or about 17/ 7/1851 His age given as 53 years.
Because he died in the Bathurst asylum they say that they are unable to trace his origins
other than that his wife was
Ann Elizabeth HUGHES. Believing that it may be a possibility to uncover the mystery with
Ann Elizabeth I found 5 Hughes women convicts, some listed as Ann some Elizabeth. The next
procedure must be to see if any of them married Thomas William BURKE but how?
"Cousins" have kindly given me a list that states that Thomas William Burke Jr a
farmer, born at Bathurst in 1845 and in 1868 being a farmer at Sandy Ck( Hunter Valley) in
the Mt Vincent postal area married Christiana TOOZE. They were born in the same
year.Christiana was the youngest child of Elizabeth Fellowes Burberry(Fanny2)& George
Tooze(Burrell) My father knew from family legends that the Burkes originated in the
Bathurst area and thought there were family connections in the Cowra district. He also
thought that they came from convict stock or had been convicts. In the 1950s these matters
were not spoken of !
From Thomas W Jr on our folk have been of Cof E Religion
clues: Thomas who died in Bathurst was said by family to have arrived on the
'MARQUES' Roman Catholic, in the parish of St James,County of Cumberland Reg.
No1217v140. Rev John Kavanagh Thomas W BURKE married Ann Elizabeth HUGHES. We cant
dispute the Anne Elizabeth entry on Thomas Jr's Marriage cert but do we have the
correct FATHER ? Any ideas appreciated
