Linda,
We did not agree to using the url at:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/census/
We agreed to using either..
http://www.usgenweb.org/census/
or to create a complete new url.
That's not what we discussed. Sue mentioned that Rootsweb has never
wanted the census project pages behind
www.usgenweb.xxx (nor has Brian
wanted any pages behind a hosted domain, not just census). This is when
we agreed to to either use Maggie's pages at a completely new URL, or
their pages at ~usgenweb/census/. If Sue had said use Maggie's pages at
usgenweb.org/census, combined with the two things we did agree upon, the
compromise would have been accepted as soon as the file managers agreed.
We did agree on the logo with proper changes to wording.
We also agreed that the logo we are currently using at:
http://www.usgenweb.org/census/
would be the logo used with the wordage changed after the two projects are
merged. I honestly don't care what the background color is, but the logo and
identity stays.
I understand Sue's concern, and wish everyone had understood my concern
when the census project was being split from the Archives. The standards
that Sue insists upon are the very same standards we, at the Archives,
set up when we started the census project in February, 1997. I am
thankful that Sue is continuing those strict standards.
As for Maggie's long hard hours... I certainly understand because
I did the
very same thing. You also have to remember that there will be many more long
hours involved when and if the two sets of pages are merged and all of the
ftp urls changed. This will also include the merger of the two assignment
databases.
I'm sorry that so many needless hours were spent on creating your second
census project web pages, but this whole thing will not fly if the original
CP (which I have always been involved in) doesn't retains it's identity. You
and your people will have to decide what matters. Whether to get the files
back into the archives and merge the personal under one leadership... or to
call this negotiation another stale mate.
By the way.... you failed to mention in your message to the Archives that
we agreed that the original project personal would officially elect the new
Archives Census Project National Coordinator before the merger took place.
The voters are the people listed as volunteers of the project at....
www.usgenweb.org/census/
We didn't discuss this in detail, only to say a merger is good timing
since they are about to decide on a new census coordinator. If they were
to merge, and combine volunteer efforts, the resulting volunteer base
would certainly be the ones to vote for a new coordinator.
The state volunteers and file managers of the other project are most
welcome
to join our team and work under our guidelines and standards. The help would
be most appreciated!!!
Maggie Zimmerman, Ron Eason, and Connie Burkett have been CC'd.
