Once again I have instigated a new round of negotiations between our Census
Project and the Archives. I personally talked with Linda Lewis on the phone
last Sunday for about 1 1/2 hours.
Points discussed and agreed on....
1) We agreed to using either the current URL..
http://www.usgenweb.org/census/
or to create a completely new url on Rootsweb... possibly
www/rootsweb.com/census/
This new url hasn't been discussed with Brian yet.
2) We also agreed that the LOGO we are currently using at:
http://www.usgenweb.org/census/
would be the logo used after the merger, but the wordage on it would be
change to: The USGenWeb
Archives Census Project. Other graphics and background colors are
negotiable.
3) Our original project personal would officially elect the new USGenWeb
Archives Census Project
National Coordinator before the merger would take place. The voters are
the people listed as volunteers of
the project at....
www.usgenweb.org/census/
4) The two assignment database would be merged and there will only be one
set of State
Coordinators making assignments. These state coordinators will include
the personal from both projects
and I assume they will be under the management of the newly elected
USGenWeb Archives Census Project
National Coordinator.
5) All of the Federal Census transcription text files will be uploaded to
the Archives at...
ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/
The Census Project file managers will have their own account and
passwords that will automatically upload the files to a
/state/county/census/fedcens directory. This will eliminate the census
project standardized files (those using CART and/or standard templates) from
getting mixed up with the miscellaneous census files that are submitted to
the Archives - like surname specific, indexes, incomplete with only names,
ages, etc.
The following issues were not addressed, but are very important to the
possible implementation of the proposed merger.
The management of the file managers, the preparation of the
transcriptions, and database
storage would not change. This management would remain Connie Burkett's
responsibility. All database
files will still be submitted to Connie Burkett and another person to be
determined. The current text file
preparation standards will not change. People from the other project
wishing to help as file managers will
be welcomed and will also be under Connie's management and direction.
I'm sure other issues will come up that will need to be worked out and just
because Linda and I talked about these issues doesn't make it a cut dried
deal. Linda has submitted the proposal to the Archive's File Managers too.
I'm sure there will be a considerable amount of discussion. There many
people involved in both projects and I would hope that personal feelings and
past vendettas can be set aside for the good of the entire project. What we
agree on now will have an impact on the future for all genealogical
researchers. Please let me know your concerns and ideas about this proposal.
Linda Lewis & Maggie Zimmerman have been CC'd.
Thank You!
Sue Soden
