Joy is right, the removal of Kenny is an issue that should be discussed
elsewhere.
But, let me get what you said straight.
You said the KS by-laws did what they were supposed to do.
--- There are no KSGenWeb by-laws, so how did they do anything?
You said the point is that ever since KS incorporated they have been a
target by some in the USGW.
--- I'm not aware of any targeting of KSGenWeb. I can assure you that
the filing of papers by KS or any other group had nothing to do with the
replacement of Kenny as an archivist for the USGenWeb Archives. He was
removed, as I said before, because there were complaints from submitters
that he was not uploading files to the USGenWeb Archives as they had
requested. They were complaining to me. When I asked him about it, he
said "they are my customers, anyway." He had told a couple people that
he was instructed by the state coordinators to *not* upload anymore new
files to the USGenWeb Archives, and they complained to me.
Those facts are documented. Those that complained choose not to speak
out at this time because of possible retaliation. I respect their
wishes. The USGenWeb Archives Board rep has communicated with one of
those parties and has permission from them to share their experience
with the Board only.
I would appreciate it if you wouldn't make accusations about things for
which you have no facts.
If you think the coordinators and/or volunteers of the USGenWeb Archives
have a "hidden agenda", please ask it directly instead of hinting that
there is one. I will answer you now - there is no hidden agenda. We are
all here for the same purpose, to provide free data for researchers. If
I didn't believe in that, I wouldn't be spending as much of my time on
this project. I wouldn't be spending so much time transcribing data for
the Archives. Most of us are not only involved in receiving, formatting,
and uploading files, we are also transcribing data for permanent
storage.
We are in the process of uploading actual census images to the
archives_html directory. We have hundreds of volunteers transcribing
census microfilm (me included) to put online for researchers.
The USGenWeb Archives have become a "valuable" entity, which we expected
when we were planning them, and put in place strict guidelines that
would protect the intention of the volunteer submitters. I'm sorry if I
take it personal when people attack the Archives and any of the
thousands of people that have built it to what it is now, but we are
trusted to do what we say on the main page of the Archives and in the
guidelines. That has been stressed over and over to the archivists, and
the USGenWeb Archives have gained a well-deserved respect in the
genealogical community, even recognized by the National Genealogical
Society. The integrity of the Archives and everyone involved in it is
being attacked by our fellow volunteers... but why??
Thanks, and I apologize for the lengthy message.
