I'm not sure if I've stressed the importance of placing "headers" on
the
files. We need the headers for the search engine to return a description
of the file for the researcher. The very first line of the file should
contain something like:
Brunswick County, VA - Will of John Doe, 1789
Also, please bookmark the Soundex conversion page and use it whenever
possible - for example, surname specific files.
http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/Genea/soundex.sh
Use soundex for files within a sub-directory which are surname specific.
For instance, in the brunswick/bibles/ directory, we might have only one
RUSSELL Bible transcription now, but in a few years, there could be 20
RUSSELL Bible transcriptions. The files should be named:
/bibles/r2400001.txt
/bibles/r2400002.txt
/bibles/r2400003.txt
/bibles/r2400004.txt
etc
The Archives are growing fast, and we need to get a "handle" on the
files now so we don't have to go back and change things later. The
guidelines address the requirements if you ever have a question.

It's also very important to get them right now, so links will not have
to be corrected. Many county coordinators link directly to the files,
and if we have to go back and change a filename later, it breaks the
link from their page.
Thanks,
Linda
