As you all know, the USGW Archives are still growing fast, and we have
nearly 2.5 gigs of text files online. It's time to start thinking about
breaking down each sub-directory to make it easier for researchers.
For instance, consider breaking down the /county/wills/ sub-dir into
years. Most of you are using soundex for filenaming. Some /wills/
directories have over 100 files within them. If those were broken down
by year, the sub-directories would look like:
/county/wills/1800/xxxxxxxx.txt
/county/wills/1801/xxxxxxxx.txt
/county/wills/1802/xxxxxxxx.txt
The census directories: It's very important that the files be broken
down into /year/ sub-directories, too.
If you start breaking the new files down now, it will make it a lot
easier to clean them up later, even if you leave the existing files
where they are at this time.
Thanks,
Linda
