Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Tim, all files must be in text format so they can be read by any
computer. Not everyone has MSWorks.
If you have Excel, you can import it to that and "save as space
delimited."
Hopefully Joy will see your question, because she knows all kinds of
neat tricks. :)

Please try to send a the new uploads list to your xxgen-l list or at
least the state coordinators for your states. I've started doing that
for the VAGenWeb cc's and find/replace the /u1/home0013, etc., and send
the actual URL for the files.
Also, please remember to use appropriate file names and directory names.
No characters, all lowercase, and use Soundex when possible. The reason
we want to use Soundex is for a future search engine that will probably
have the Soundex search option. It's better to name them that way now,
than to have to change thousands of filenames later.
What I've tried to do in the Virginia directory is combine wills into
one file, named for the Will Book, as in willbk12.txt. Contributors'
names are placed with each individual will within that one file.
Eventually, the way this repository will work <g>, is that we will have
complete transcriptions of willbooks, marriage books, deeds, etc.
Look at how Angela Ruley is doing the Deed Books for Rockbridge County
VA:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/va/rockbridge/deedtoc.htm
It reduces the updating time for tocs! :)
Thanks,
Linda

<< Yes the password changed AGAIN..... Sorry folks, I Hope this one lasts for

AOL users (over ten million the last I heard) do not have the privilege of
this option.
Every time the access is altered, we must try to keep up with the change. I
currently have desktop notes indicating three passwords to be made available
when uploading files. One out of three has to be fairly good odds, but the
hassle is burdensome. With extreme limitations on my ability to sort through
a minimum of four "required reading" mail lists and an average of 125 emails
daily, it will best serve KYGenWeb if I reduce the workload (and pride) to the
level of asking for help.
So, with sincere regret, I MUST formally request that Bullitt County of the
KYGenWeb Project be annotated and announced as an orphan county for reasons of
finding an Archivist, Genconnect Board Manager and Home page Webmaster.
============
For those folks that must know the inside story, I can only provide the
following;
I have managed the county CC duties for two years to the best of my ability.
It has been a real struggle to say the least because the venue has been
entirely on a VOLUNTARY basis. The duty of administration is easy compared to
the politicism that has overcome my efforts considering I have been in
computing for more than 30 years and attained the level of technician in the
field as a normal person. I now associate USGW with the Boy Scouts of
America. After being a volunteer parent for seven years, I learned that the
boys and parents would have more fun in the organization if it were not for
the organizers interfering. I have seen great improvements in the KYGenWeb
Project come about in a very short time frame. While the fact remains we have
done without such benefits to date regarding the Internet and genealogy, I
cannot fathom what the critical rush is to circumvent the learning curve
needed to appease collected volunteers in such mass numbers or provide solace
to the ones at hand. Simply stated, organization is good and control is bad!
To those folks that I have worked with directly, I must apologize for bailing
out as I do so with great respect on your behalf. To those that have recently
become participants, I wish you the best of luck and hold the utmost respect
for a true volunteer.
Let me close by saying this: As someone with a "Thirty Minute Itinerary" life
style, it is not the trip to Scout-O-Rama that is hard, rather how I am
expected to get there. I will commit to any needed transitional requirements,
training and support for the CC duties on a direct one on one communication
with any newly "appointed" volunteer. My only regret is that I cannot pass on
web pages as great as I have seen in KYGenWeb. Time restrictions and control
demands are making it impossible for me to do a better job. My current goal
is to leave gracefully before someone "takes" it all away and leaves me
hanging out to dry my own tears in shame.
Respectfully,
Thomas Hembrey

Apologies for not sending this earlier. I'm on vacation and away from my
own computer, and not d/l'ing mail too often.
The state file managers on archives-L are upset, too, and are contacting
their board reps. The motion has been seconded, and another motion to
table it has been seconded, but a point of order was taken because the
nat coord did not recognize the first motion. ok...that said.. here's
the motion:

No. The by-laws do not say that. Actually, the Archives have had strict
guidelines since the beginning (1996), and are grandfathered in. The
only time those can change is if the volunteers of the Archives vote to
change something. That's the way it's been since before any board or
by-laws, and that's the way it is now.

I wanted to make my feelings known on the Motion separate from the message
containing the motion that I forwarded to the list.
I cannot find the motion yet posted on the USGenWeb Site. I do not agree
with this motion. As the manager of the Oklahoma archives and as county
archivist for Marion Co, AR I want to see all information pertaining to a
county in the county files. Not split up and maintained separately between
the tombstone project, the census project and whatever else comes along. I
maintain the Oklahoma Tombstone project page that is accessible from the
USGenWeb Special project page, but the actual files for these cemeteries
reside in the county archives which is where I feel they belong.
It's hard enough to get people to be archivists for the counties and it
takes a lot time and effort to convince people to put information in the
archives, especially information that is already found on the county web
pages. If information is split again I swear I don't think it will be
worth the effort.

This motion was posted on the ALL list. Since it concerns the Archivist
much more than the county web site managers I wanted everyone to read this
that is an archivist.
You should make your feelings known on this to the Board - either for or
against. The Archive representative is Linda Lewis - who maintains this
list. If you are also a county co-ordinator you should also make your
feelings known to your area's board representative.
