Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
I am all for uploading these files to my counties archives directories. I
thought that is why we were asked to take over the archives in the first
place. I want to create the files and submit them to my directories, not
someone else. I have notified the person that I thought was the person
updating the cemetery index page for Oklahoma but have not seen any updating.
I may be mistaken as to whom that should have been???

I'm with Nancy, I prefer to load the files myself. As with some of the
projects, stuff gets loaded and you never know it until you run across it
the next time you are out there looking. Just found something tonight for
one of my counties that I was not notified it was online.
Cemetery, I've been putting them online and emailing the address to link to
the Tombstone coordinator for Ky, when I get them first. If the tombstone
project gets the file sent to them, no problem, but if a file is sent to
me, I don't want to send it to someone else for them to fix and load.

Maybe I'm dense... but why not just let the person handling that county
archives dir handle it? If someone sends me a cemetery file for my county
I'll place it in the archives myself thank you... I thought that was what I
was there for??? I also don't appreciate someone else putting files in my
dir... again... I thought I was there for that purpose??? Or maybe all the
special projects are going to take over the archives? Let's see... we have
someone handling the census files, and the cemetery files... next will be
an Obits project and a bible project and a ????. Why should I even bother
to volunteer to handle my county archives directory since all the special
projects are handling it for me???

Yes! <whew> That's exactly right. :)
All of you might want to check the (temporary) upload directory to see
if any census files have been uploaded for your county, grab them and
upload them to the appropriate directory and add them to your toc:
ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/census

The "other" projects' files are uploaded to the Archives ftp directory,
so yes, you would add the link to your toc. Again.. it's communication.
Do you want them to send the file directly to you for uploading, or do
you want them to upload it and then notify you?

Well, after I looked at the Tombstone Project for Oklahoma, where I am the
county archivist for a few counties, I see that it is just links to the
USGenWeb Archives and I don't have to upload again at all.

Why should it even be duplicated? Shouldn't it go in the county archives
dir? Isn't that what the dir is there for? The tombstone project, or
census project, or any other project, can do the linking to the file in the
county directory. I have no problems with notifying someone else to add
the link or for anyone putting together a set of links to all files of one
kind. I do have a problem with me being the CC for my county, both
archives and county, with others telling me to send my county files to them
to handle and upload to another county dir... or to my dir. I'll handle my
own dir and my own county files thank you. If someone sends one of the
other projects a file that belongs to my county and they put it on their
site, I'll be glad to link to it.

It's perfectly okay for the county fm to handle their own files,
including cemetery, Bibles, census, etc. I'm trying to get us to
determine the best way for everyone, and to avoid duplications. Some
visitors to all the sites (special projects) may not realize that the
files go in the same repository, the USGenWeb Archives, even though
there are links from the census and tombstone project pages to the
files, too.
The key is communication. Get to know the person of each special project
and work out the best system for you. It might be easier for the other
sp proj vol's to send the file to the archivists/fm's for uploading.
Some fm's might be overworked and welcome the assistance.
There are several ways to approach it, one being the t-stone and census
folks sending the file directly to the appropriate fm. I think those two
projects have one person per state, while the USGW Archives has several,
including county fm's.

Well, I am sure I can't say it that well, but I prefer to load the
cemetery records to my county archives space first. I can send them to
the Tombstone Project too.

How would y'all feel about all cemetery files being sent to the

uploading files? They would then contact the appropriate fm so the toc

This project is growing so fast, we will probably have to build a

This is backwards. If the USGW Archives chooses to link to my archival
directory they are certainly able to do so at their discretion. Files I
upload are available to the general public. Files that I am unaware of would
require a courtesy note informing me of their existence. They would then be
placed in my county archives directory which is password accessible.
If I have missed something here, please let me know!

I don't have any problems saying it this way:
"I will continue to upload any archive files as I feel appropriate for my
county to the respective directories and if the Tombstone Project folks want a
copy of them they already know the URI."

The turkey shot out of the oven
and rocketed into the air,
it knocked every plate off the table
and partly demolished a chair.
It ricocheted into a corner
and burst with a deafening boom,
then splattered all over the kitchen,
completely obscuring the room.
It stuck to the walls and the windows,
it totally coated the floor,
there was turkey attached to the ceiling,
where there'd never been turkey before.
It blanketed every appliance,
It smeared every saucer and bowl,
there wasn't a way I could stop it,
that turkey was out of control.
I scraped and I scrubbed with displeasure,
and thought with chagrin as I mopped,
that I'd never again stuff a turkey
with popcorn that hadn't been popped.

We've changed the pw-d's for all the states again. Sorry for the
inconvenience, but it has to be done once in awhile. I waited until the
1st so everyone could get their end-of-month files uploaded.
If you are a cc file manager, please get the info from your state fm.
All the others, ask Joy or me privately.
Thanks,
